$20 makeup challenge?

28 Jun

Pants here. I’m a big fan of makeup videos on YouTube – duh. A lot of girls do the $20 makeup challenge, and I love/hate these videos.

Basically, the story behind the $20 challenge is that you’ve lost all of your makeup (I know, that’s terrifying, but we’ll get through it together), and you ONLY have TWENTY DOLLARS to replace everything.

I take this a little too seriously and ask a lot of questions. Did I just temporarily lose my makeup? Like, did I leave it at home and I’m only going to be out of town overnight? Then I’ll be fine without it. Did the airport lose my makeup bag and I’ll have to go the whole trip without it? Then that’s unacceptable, for multiple reasons and that airline is going to get a stern talking to.

In these videos, girls typically leave out products to make the cut – sometimes skipping foundation and only using concealer for spots. Pffft, no.

Before I even start this challenge, I’ve already failed because I know it won’t be under $20 and I’m not even going to try to keep it under. What I’m doing is picking out the most inexpensive products that I like AND that I typically use every day.

20dollarchallenge

(Let’s just pretend that the Wet n Wild palette in the photo isn’t green – I’d pick a more neutral one for this situation.)

  • Revlon Nearly Naked foundation (Vanilla) – $7.49 – This is the only drugstore foundation that I’ve ever actually liked. It has a light to medium coverage and is a pretty light formula. It looks nice when applied with fingers or a brush. AND it doesn’t make me look shiny or orange – always a plus. I was using this every day, but I’ve recently switched to a BB cream because I prefer really light coverage during the summer.
  • Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder (Transparent) – $3.97 – I bought this on the recommendation of Tanya Burr, who is one of my favorite beauty gurus on YouTube. She was an actual makeup artist and  knows her stuff. I bought this to replace my $20+ MAC Mineral Skin Finish Natural and I can’t tell a difference between the two once they’ve been applied.
  • Maybelline Dream Lumi concealer (Radient) – $6.44 – I don’t have dark under eye circles, but sometimes my eyes are dark on the outside corners, so I like to lighten them up with a salmon concealer. The concealer I previously used creased in the lines under my eyes, and that’s not cute. I admit, this one will crease not long after I’ve applied it, but then I dab it with my finger once I’ve finished all of my makeup, and it doesn’t happen again for the rest of the day.
  • N.Y.C. Smooth Skin Face Powder Sunny bronzer$2.99 – If you’ve watched YouTube beauty videos, I’m sure you’ve heard many girls talk about this. I resisted for a long time. Then Red gave in, loved it and I decided I had to try it. I’ve been using it every day since. It’s pigmented, so I don’t have to use much. It’s great for contouring my ghostly pale skin, and doesn’t make me look orange.
  • Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blush (Hot Tamale) – $6.94 – This was one of those things that I kept seeing around and it looked so interesting that I had to try it. I had heard that they weren’t very pigmented, so I picked the brightest color available, and I love how it looks.  Plus, it’s easy to apply with fingers.
  • *Maybelline Define-A-Brow eyebrow pencil (Medium Brown) – $5.97 – Honestly, I’m not a fan of these. They’re a little waxy and you only get 1/3 of the product you do in the MAC Eye Brows, which I love. Plus, when I bought them, I could never find them under $7. At $16, the MAC Eye Brows is the better deal.
  • *e.l.f. Eyelid Primer$1 – Meh. I need primer so that my shadows don’t crease if I get sweaty. I MEAN GLOWY. Girls don’t sweat, remember?! I tried this a couple years ago, and wasn’t impressed. Other people love it. It’s only $1, though, so why not try it out?
  • *Wet n Wild Coloricon Eye Shadow Trio (Silent Treatment) – $2.09 – Another of my favorite girls on YouTube, Leighannsays, loves her some Wet n Wild. I decided to try out a couple trios, and I was honestly impressed. Both palettes I bought were green, and I’m not a green eyeshadow everyday type of girl, so they don’t get much use. I might have to try a more neutral one sometime.
  • Maybelline Eye Studio Gel Liner (Sapphire) –  $7.94 – I’ve tried high-end cream liners and Maybelline’s work just as well. The only downside is the color selection isn’t that great. But if you need a black, brown, navy or purple cream liner, these are the way to go. PLUS, each one comes with a brush that actually gets a precise line.
  • Maybelline Volume Express Mega Plush waterproof mascara (Very Black) – $5.94 – This is my current favorite drugstore mascara. This is actually a gel-mousse mascara, which means it leaves eyelashes feeling soft, instead of crunchy. Even the waterproof feels soft, and it holds curl. I’ve heard people say this is for a more natural look, but if you just keep adding more, you can pump up the jams, er, volume. And it’s not clumpy!

TOTAL = $50.77

*products I don’t currently own/use, but have in the past, so they aren’t in the photo

Oh, but wait! You’ve lost all of your brushes, too, because the world is a cruel, cruel place. I think I could get away with just these two tools:

  • Real Techniques blush brush$8.99 – Recently bought this and fell in love. It’s so soft, and perfect for blush. However, it could easily be used for setting powder all over the face and contouring with bronzer.

  • e.l.f. eyelash curler $1 – I did use this for a while, but then went on to another curler. It’s been a long time since I’ve used it, but I think it worked fine. My lashes are really hard to curl and go straight down, so I’m always trying new curlers and keeping my fingers crossed for a miracle.
NEW TOTAL = $60.76

Okay, that’s triple the allowed amount. Whoops? But really, drugstore makeup isn’t as cheap as you think it is and adds up quickly. I could have gone the e.l.f. route because many of their products are only $1 to $3, but why buy something that I’m not going to continue to use? Why not buy products that I like? If I don’t use the products when I (hopefully) get my makeup back, then it was a waste of $20.

Ow, ow, okay, stop twisting my arm. If I ABSOLUTELY had to keep it under $20, here’s what I would buy:

  • Revlon Nearly Naked foundation – $7.49
  • Maybelline Define-A-Brow eyebrow pencil – $5.97
  • Maybelline Volume Express Mega Plush waterproof mascara – $5.94

TOTAL = $19.40

Foundation is important. My skin is pretty clear most of the time, but I get flushed pretty easily, so I’d just like to have it evened out.  After that, eyebrows and eyelashes are equally important. As everyone and your mother has always said, eyebrows frame your face. Luckily, I do have eyebrows and they’re dark, but they need filled in. My eyelashes are the same way – dark, but need a assistance. Plus, I look 12 without my mascara, as opposed to looking 16 like usual.

If you only had $20 to replace your makeup, what would you buy?

Pants’ Plum Picks!

7 Mar

Pants here. Lately, I’ve been really loving plum lip colors. I feel it’s a good transition color from winter to spring. I think they’re really flattering for pale ladies, such as Red and myself. Today, I’ll share my favorites that I’ve accumulated over the last few months.

Sephora Rouge Cream Lipstick in Crush 23 ($12, sephora.com) – This is described as a deep reddish plum. I have to be very careful when applying this because it is on the darker side. I usually use a lip brush, then apply some extra foundation or concealer around my lips to make it look cleaner. My skin is kinda pinky, so if you have red/pink areas on your face, a deep color like this will make them stand out. The lipstick looks much darker than it is when applied.

Urban Decay Super-Saturated High Gloss Lip Color in Apocalypse ($19, sephora.com) – Saw this color swatched on several blogs and really loved how it looked on everyone who wore it. When I finally got to Sephora I swatched it on my hand and kept staring at it. I knew I must own it. It’s a deep plum, but I typically use the Lisa Eldridge method of dabbing it on with my fingers, then rubbing it in like a stain. It looks matte this way, but does look glossy when applied normally.

Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey ($15, clinique.com) – This is considered a cult favorite, and now I know why. Love this. LOVE it. It’s moisturizing and gives just a slight hint of plum on the lips. It looks really nice over top of the other colors I’ve mentioned above, too. Since it’s sheer, it works with your natural lip color. It’s a good introduction to a plum lip.

Revlon Just Bitten in Crave ($6.74, amazon.com) – I’ve been addicted to lipstains lately. You can get two completely different looks with them – matte when applied alone or shiny with gloss on top. Actually, depending on what color of gloss you use, you can get several different looks – shimmery, glittery, a hint of color to depend or lighten it. I just recently picked this one up, and already love it. It’s more of a bright plum than a deep one. Plus, it has a lip balm on the end so you only have to carry one product with you for touch-ups.

Dark lip colors like this can really make you look a little goth if you don’t wear enough blush. Lisa Eldridge suggests applying some blush, and then retouching after you apply your lip color. And we always do what Lisa says – she’s a makeup genius.

What plum lip products are you loving?

February 2012 Favoritessss

1 Mar

With February out of the way, we’re one step closer to Spring, thank goodness! No mo’ snow! And hopefully no more dry skin!

Here are the products we just couldn’t put down in February:

Pants:

Urban Decay Naked2 ($50, urbandecay.com) – I know many people weren’t impressed with this palette, but I’ve been using it almost everyday. I think I’ve used it more than I ever used the original Naked. My favorite color combos are Bootycall on the brow bone, Tease in the crease, and either Suspect, Pistol or YDK on the lid. Busted is a great outer V color. If you don’t have the Naked2, this is just mumbo jumbo. Let’s just say, I’m really, really happy that I got this palette for Christmas.

Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-hour Blush in Tipsy ($24, tartecosmetics.com) – I think this may have been my favorite last month, too. I have loved coral and peach colors since I was little, and it makes me super happy to have some bright coral on my cheeks. This blush is matte, and I love to add a little bit of shimmer on my cheek bones.

Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstain in Cranberry Crush ($2.49, Amazon.com) – Of course this is discontinued, because I LOVE it. This is a bright cranberry red, which leans more on the red side than purple. It lasts a really long time (like I wake up the next morning and it’s still on), and looks good solo or with gloss on top. Sometimes I like to pair red, glittery glosses on top, but clear gloss looks great, as well. I could see it being a nice all-year-round red lip color. I may actually have to stock up on this.

Red:

Chanel Joues Contraste Blush in #55 In Love ($43, chanel.com) – I actually picked this blush up from All Cosmetics Wholesale for a little more affordable price. This is a blush that was recommended by Lauren Conrad and is why I now own it. It’s a coral-peach with golden shimmer. The shimmer is super light. It’s such a gorgeous color. I love the flush it gives my cheeks and I cannot put it down.

Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow/Liner in Birthday Suit ($19, benefit.com) – This is an amazing shimmery brushed chrome cream shadow. I absolutely love it. I’ve been pairing it with MAC’s Sable, a plum/brown shade, and love the combination.

Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter in Creme Brule ($7, target.com) – I have been going with a light nude lip  as of late. I love this light shimmery shade. It pairs well with almost any eye look.

Tell us, what have you been loving this month?

Valentine’s Pink

14 Feb

Happy Valentine’s Day, you guys. Instead of Tried It Tuesday here are some of our all-time favorite pink items.

Eyes:

Red – MAC’s Naked Lunch ($15, maccosmetics.com) – This shadow is a light shimmery pink and it is GORGEOUS. It pairs well with so many different shades. No worries, it’s a perfect shade alone as well. This happens to be one of Selena Gomez’s favorites. She keeps hitting re-peat-peat-peat-peat-peat and wears it over and over.

PantsClinique Strawberry Fudge ($19.50, clinique.com) – I don’t wear pink eyeshadow too often, but when I do, it’s usually this one from the Clinique Strawberry Fudge duo. The pink is a bright pastel pink with a gold shimmer in it. It’s not overpoweringly pink, and I love the hint of gold.

Cheeks:

Red – NARS Blush in Amour ($28, sephora.com) – This is a beautiful, bright peachy pink. It’s perfect in the summer, but can really punch up the winter as well. This happens to be one of Lauren Conrad’s favorites. Besides the beautiful color this is why I own this blush.

Pants – NARS Blush in Angelika ($28, sephora.com) – When I want a pink cheek, this is what I go to. I love the cotton candy pink of this blush, and it has tiny silver sparkles in it, too. It’s great for adding a pop of color to the apples of your cheeks.

Lips:

Red – Revlon Lip Butter in Sugar Plum ($7.50, walgreens.com) – This is a super pretty plumy rose color and it gives your lips a nice flush. I like to use a light wash of this color over my lips.

Pants Urban Decay Lip Junkie in Crush ($19, urbandecay.com) – I love bright lip colors, and this gloss is great for a hint of brightness. It’s a glossy fuchsia that works well alone, or adds a little pizazz over top of a hot pink lip stain.

Nails:

Red – Essie Nail Polish in Fun in the Gondola ($8, essie.com) – I like pink polish, but it’s not one that I typically gravitate toward when painting my nails. When I am in the mood for a pink polish I like Fun in the Gondola. Its a nice mauve pink and looks nice on my ghostly complexion.

Pants – Essie Nail Polish in A Cut Above ($8, essie.com) – I don’t really do pink nails. I’m more of a purple/green/blue/gray kinda girl. But I LOVE LOVE LOVE this pink glitter polish over top of purple polish. The pink and purple pair reminds me of Jem, one of my favorite cartoons from when I was little. I want to be truly outrageous too!

Tell us,  what are your favorite pinks?

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!

Tried It Tuesday – Revlon Lip Butters

20 Dec

If you’ve been perusing beauty blogs, then we’re sure that you’ve heard all the buzz about Revlon’s Lip Butters. We definitely have and scoured our tiny little town for them. Pants found them first and picked some up for the both of us.

Revlon Lip Butters ($7, target.com):

Red:

I had already been all over the land, and was so excited when Pants told me she found the Lip Butters. I picked Sugar Plum to try first. I just performed in the Nutcracker, I can’t resist anything dance related. Sugar Plum is a gorgeous pinky plum color. I will say that I was skeptical about a Revlon lip product. Typically their lipsticks have a smell I just can’t get over. This is not the case with this Lip Butter. It doesn’t seem to have an odor, or at least it’s not very offensive and I don’t notice. I was also pleasantly surprised with how moisturizing the Lip Butters leave your lips. I may have been a judgy judgerson about this stuff before I even tried it, and I’m glad that my thinking was wrong.

I give the Lip Butters 4 out of 5 sparkles.

Pants:

(Peach Parfait, Lollipop)

At first, I didn’t want these. Then the hype got to me. After seeing nvmakeuplover’s review and swatches, I decided that I NEEDED Lollipop, and I also got Peach Parfait because I’m a sucker for anything peach. These are definitely moisturizing and go on smoothly. I can’t say much about staying power, because I’m ALWAYS eating or drinking something or touching my mouth, so it’s not fair to go by my judgement. I will say that the staying power is acceptable to me – I don’t feel like I have to reapply every 30 minutes. The Peach Parfait is a golden peach with some shimmer to it, which makes it a great everyday color. Lollipop is a bright fuchsia. Obvi, I love me some fuchsia lipsticks. I would consider this a nice “going out” color. I really can’t think of anything I don’t like about these.

I give the Lip Butters 5 out of 5 sparkles.

August Favies

31 Aug

It’s that time again! Here are our favorites for the month of August.

Pants:

Too Faced Perfect Eyes Waterproof and Tearproof Eyeliner in Perfect Storm ($18, toofaced.com) – I don’t agree that this is tear proof. It should hold up for “wedding tears” or “mild allergy tears.” “Severe allergy tears” or “got in a car wreck tears,” and this stuff will be gone. However, I still love this liner. On most days, I shouldn’t have to worry about it coming off, and it doesn’t. I wanted a dark gray liner to go with one of the looks from the Too Faced Naked Eye Collection. This is dark gray, with some glitter. It’s perfect for everyday.

Benefit Sugarbomb ($28, benefitcosmetics.com) – I’ve had this blush for a while, but I kind of rediscovered it this month. I just love the peachy pink glow it gives my cheeks.

Escada Taj Sunset To Go ($20, Sephora.com) – I JUST bought this the first week in August, and I’ve already almost used half of it. LOVE it. It has a citrusy smell, but not like kitchen cleaner citrus, like delicious citrus mixed drinks. I just discovered today that Macy’s also carries this fragrance in a shower gel AND lotion. I’m definitely going to have to make a trip there this weekend.

Red:

Naked Palette ($48, Sephora.com) – I hadn’t used this palette in quite a while and recently picked it up again. I don’t think I have put it down since rediscovering it. I’ve been having fun creating a different look every day with this palette.

Revlon Just Bitten Lipstain and Balm in Mystical  ($8, Target.com) – Pants told me about this lipstain and of course I had to try it out. I’ve been having fun using it during the day for a pretty nude look.

MAC Lipstick in Angel ($14.50, Maccosmetics.com) – This lipstick has been highly raved about in the YouTube community. I’ve had my eye on it for a while, and finally purchased it. It is the most amazing pink ever. EVER. It’s perfectly acceptable to wear during the day, but I have been loving it for a nighttime lip.

Tell us, what are your favies for this month?
