It’s not easy bein’ green

8 Mar

St. Patty’s day is coming up and we already have our green makeup picked out. We hope you do too. In case you don’t, here are our picks for some green fun.

Chanel Illusion D’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in #84 Epatant ($36, chanel.com)

Just in case bright shadows aren’t your thing, this is an amazing greenish taupe shade. You can sparkle and shimmer all day and/or night.

Urban Decay Glide on Eye Pencil in Graffiti ($19, sephora.com)

You can have some real fun with a bright green eye pencil. This particular one has great pigmentation.

Lancome Color Fever Gloss – Green Petal ($26, nordstrom.com)

This gloss may look scary, but it doesn’t look green on your lips. It just adds some pretty green glitter than you can wear alone or on top of another lip product.

Already have some green makeup, but don’t know how to wear it? No worries! Here are some tutorials:

A bright look: Sour Skittles by xsparkage

A standard look: Lucky Green by MakeupByTiffanyD

A smokey/glittery look:  Smokey Glittery Green Tutorial by AlbaMayo

A dramatic look: Anything Goes Liquid Liner by Lisa Eldridge

How much green do you plan on sporting for St. Patty’s Day?

Poll Results – How many foundations do you use?

6 Feb

Well it’s looking like that most of you just have one foundation in your arsenal.  There is definitely nothing wrong with that. If you have one fabulous foundation that you love love love, then so be it!

Red:

Now that I’ve started thinking about it, I realized that I have several different foundations. I have my reasons though!

Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation ($42, Sephora.com) – Don’t let the price deter you. I’ve been able to purchase this foundation at a discounted price at All Cosmetics Wholesale. The reason why I have this foundation is because it has a stronger covering power than my others. I like it for special occasions and night outs when I know I’m going to need a little extra coverage and when I know I’ll be having my picture taken. I also like it because it doesn’t have SPF in it. Did you know that a foundation with SPF isn’t the best to wear for photographs? The zinc oxide is the culprit and can cause that paled out face look in photographs.

Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Makeup ($45, Nordstrom.com) – I recently started using this foundation. I have always been looking for that Holy Grail every day foundation and think I’ve finally found it. I need a few things from an every day foundation. I want it to make my skin look flawless, not dry me out, and somehow still look very natural. This does all of the above. It is so light, you really can’t even tell that you are wearing makeup. This foundation is water based and therefore is very hydrating. It also has SPF in it which is great to help protect my skin and keep it looking young. This one comes with a pretty hefty price tag as well, but I think it’s worth every penny. It will last for quite a while as a little goes a long way.

Stila Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15 ($16, Stilacosmetics.com) – I think this tinted moisturizer has been discontinued because it is on clearance and limited quantities are available. This is what I used everyday. I later switched and was only using it during the summer months. It does have shimmer to it and gives you a pretty healthy glow. It’s very light, but now as I have gotten a little bit older I think the coverage is too sheer for me. I definitely felt the need for something with a little more coverage.

MAC Select SPF Foundation ($27, maccosmetics.com) – Before I found the above mentioned Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua, I was using this as my every day foundation. I liked it for the most part. It had nice coverage. I did notice during the winter months that it dried my skin out a little bit on my cheeks and around my mouth. That’s why I was still looking for other foundations.

Pants:

I used to only have one foundation, and it was my beloved Lancome Aqua Fusion Teinte. But because it has been discontinued (sad face), I’ve been accumulating new foundations lately. I didn’t realize until I gathered them all up. I was also on the search for a full coverage foundation for special occasions. I’ll talk about the ones that I use.

Lancome Aqua Fusion Teinte ($38.50, lancome-usa.com) – Loved this so much. It was the first foundation product I used, and I never felt the need to try anything else for everyday use. I have combination skin, and my forehead can look oily, but somehow flakey at the same time. I never had that issue with this product. Plus, with the SPF, I never got sunburned, and my nose used to burn all the time. The coverage was light, and looked natural. It felt like I wasn’t wearing anything on my face. This is what I’m looking for.

tarte Amazonian Clay Full-Coverage Foundation SPF15 with brush! ($34.56, qvc.com) – Here’s the thing about this one – I really like it. I like it a lot. It has good coverage, and it doesn’t make me look oily or flakey. It lasts for hours… but I bought the wrong color. I thought since I was pale as a ghost, that I would be fair, but it turns out that I’m light. I think if I wear it and make sure to blend into my neck and put on some bronzer, it might be fine. However, I keep meaning to do this and let Red see it and give me her opinion. I don’t want to look crazy. I would have exchanged it, but with QVC you have to pay more for shipping, so I just kept it. The brush is AMAZING, and it costs $32 alone, so it was totally worth it.

Elizabeth Arden Intervene Makeup SPF 15 ($36, elizabetharden.com) – My mom and I both got color matched for Elizabeth Arden foundations when we were Christmas shopping. They gave us little samples of our colors to try out. I fell in love. This foundation is the perfect coverage, goes on smooth and keeps me looking matte. It also looks great all day, I don’t notice it breaking down or oxidizing. It doesn’t feel heavy at all. This will be my special occasion foundation.

Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Makeup ($45, Nordstrom.com) – Like Red, I also recently got this foundation. What I love is that it’s water-based, like the Lancome Tinted moisturizer. It’s a thin consistency, but gives nice coverage – my skin, but better. It’s light and leaves my skin feeling soft. I am experiencing some forehead flakes, but I’ve been trying new products lately that have broke me out as well, so I’m working on that. This will probably take Lancome’s place and become my everyday foundation product.

Best of 2011 – Face Products

4 Jan

We decided to pick out our favorite products we used in 2011. Instead of having one crazy long post with a ba-jillion items, we decided to cut it down by category so that we can maybe focus a little more on our super duper favies.

Keep in mind, these products weren’t necessarily released in 2011 – they were products we used in 2011 and we loved.

Today we’re going to talk about products we use on our face, including makeup, cleansers and moisturizers.

(Pants’ favorites. Keep reading to find out what they are!)

Makeup

Foundation

Tinted Moisturizer

Concealer

Powder (pressed or loose)

Highlighter (for cheeks)

Bronzer

Blush

  • Red – Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Tipsy – This is the perfect coral shade. It doesn’t have any shimmer in it and it gives your cheeks the most amazing punch of color.
  • PantsBenefit Sugarbomb – I love the natural color of this with the hint of shimmer. I find myself going back to this blush again and again, especially if I’m short on time because it’s like a blush and highlight in one step.

Skin Care

Face Wash

Makeup Remover

Moisturizer

Current Lipstick Loves

12 Oct

It is no secret that lipstick sales have been on the rise. Gone are the sticky glosses and in are the smooth rich lipstick colors. We Glimmer Shimmer girls definitely love ourselves a gloss, but we find that as of late we keep reaching for lipsticks.

Here are some of our faves:

Red:

MAC’s Lipstick in Angel ($14.50, maccosmetics.com) – This is an AH-mazing pink color. It looks great for daytime and nighttime. It’s not too in your face so you can pair it with almost any eye shadows.

NP Set in Denver ($16, target.com) – This lipstick was just in my September favies. It’s is the most perfect nude color.  It’s another one that translates from day to night with no effort at all.

NP Set in Cancun ($16, target.com) – The absolute most fabulous rusty bronze color is why I fell in love with this lipstick.  It’s the perfect shade that you can apply with your finger for a nice wash of color or use a brush to punch up the intensity.

Pants:

I’m usually a lip balm or clear gloss kinda girl, but lately I’ve been wearing these lipsticks when I go out. It’s nice to have some shimmer without being super glossy.

Lancome Color Design in Top Model – So I probably should have looked this up first. I got this free with one of those sets when you spend a certain amount. And apparently it’s not sold on the Lancome website. I don’t know if it’s discontinued or what. But it’s a pretty neutral peachy pink with a hint of gold.

Tarte LipSurgence Natural Lip Luster in Sweet (exclusive to the Radiant & Rested collection, $42, Sephora.com) – I’m not doing so well at picking out easy to find color. But like I’ve said before, this Tarte collection is awesome! Anyway, this is a light pink color with gold shimmer. This one is more pink, while Top Model leans more toward a neutral peach.

Maybelline Color Sensational in Fifth Ave. Fuchsia ($7.49, maybelline.com) – I like to wear this because it’s the same color as my pink extensions. It’s not something I would wear just anywhere, but it’s fun for non-professional type things.

Here are the swatches:

Here is the lovely Lisa Eldridge shows you how to achieve four cute lipstick looks with only one lip color. She is so crafty!

Poll Results – What products are essential for summer travel?

7 Jul

According to our poll on Friday, the most important products for summer travel are moisturizer, lip balm with SPF and shimmery eyeshadow. Coming in second place was waterproof mascara.

Well, it just depends where you’re traveling to during the summer. Remember all those fun things Pants packed? Well New York was hot as balls, so it really didn’t make sense to use most of those products. Blush? No need because she was constantly flushed from the heat and walking up all the stairs everywhere because apparently all up escalators in the city were broken.

Pants’ essentials included:

  • Lancome Aqua Fusion Teinte  tinted moisturizer
  • Urban Decay Primer Potion in Eden (no creases despite all the sweat!)
  • Too Faced Natural Eye Neutral Eye Collection
  • Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Eye Pencil in Black Plum
  • Tarina Tarantino Fleur de Lash
I didn’t even dry my hair, and went with some pigtail buns most of the weekend. I don’t THINK that I looked like balls, but I also don’t have any photos of myself, so you’ll just have to trust me. Or ask my boyfriend. And his glasses are broken. Convenient, huh?

Red’s Essentials:

  • Stila Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15
  • Urban Decay Naked Palette
  • NARS Blush/Bronzer Duo in Angelika and Laguna
  • MAC Paint Pot in Painterly
I feel these items make me look my best during the summer,  no matter the heat and humidity.

Tell us, what are your essential items during the summer?

Makeup Goods of the Traveling Pants

30 Jun

Pants is heading out of town this weekend, and she’s got her bags packed. Although she usually packs her makeup in the morning as she uses it, this time she couldn’t risk forgetting a precious item.

Here’s a little look at what’s in her makeup bag!

Pants: I keep my makeup in the left side in the large zipper pocket. It has a clear cover so no worries about leaks! Inside there is:

  • Lancome Aqua Fusion Teinte
  • NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Cottage Cheese
  • MAC Eyebrows in Lingering
  • Tarina Tarantino Fleur de Lash
  • Stila Sparkle Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in Electric
  • Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Eye Pencil in Black Plum
  • Hard Candy Glamoflague concealor
  • Urban Decay Primer Potion in Eden
  • MAC Mineralize Skin Finish Natural in Light
  • Benefit High Beam (mini version!)
  • MAC eyeshadow in Jealousy Wakes (Temptalia’s color!!! Best. Green. EVER!)
  • NARS Blush/Bronzer Trio (hidden in the top left – it’s all black)
  • Too Faced Natural Eye Neutral Eye Collection
Then in the middle section, I’ve got my brushes!
  • Tarina Tarantino #12 Powder Brush
  • Tarina Tarantino #74 Smudge Brush
  • Tarina Tarantino #56 Crease Brush
  • Sigma Travel E25 Blending Brush
  • Stila #5 All Over Shadow Brush
  • Bare Escentuals mini kabuki (came free from Sephora with a powder sample – it’s the perfect size for the NARS Albatross highlighter in the trio!)
Whew, that seems like a lot when I write it out. Now let’s get to the other side!
The other side of the zipper flap is empty. It’s pretty flat, so I couldn’t fit much in it.
Most of the stuff in the left side are things I keep in there at all times (except my eyelash curler and kabuki brush). This side is also a little deeper, and is a mesh pocket. Here’s what’s inside:
  • Almay Oil-Free Makeup Eraser Sticks
  • Travel Q-tips!
  • Travel Cotton Rounds
  • Lancome Bi-Facil Double-Action Eye Makeup Remover
  • Clean & Clear Oil-Absorbing Sheets
  • Travel tissues (stolen from Red Roof Inn)
  • Mirror
  • Bobby pins
  • Comb
  • French Vanilla Softlips
  • Too Faced Kabuki Brush
  • Sonia Kashuk eyelash curler

My bag is from Target, and is by Contents. It’s called the Weekender Cosmetic Bag. I got it for Christmas, so this style isn’t around any more, but I found a similar one on Amazon in my favorite colors!

Man… that’s a lot of stuff. I hope my suitcase is within the weight limit.

Poll Results – Do you wear your freckles proud?

20 Jun

This week, the poll results was 100% hell to the yes! If you do have freckles, we Glimmer Shimmer gals think you should wear them proud. Red is super freckly and likes to show hers off especially during the summer.

The key item to showing off your freckles is a sheer foundation or tinted moisturizer. Here our some of our picks:

Stila Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20:

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20:

Lancome Aqua Fusion Teinte:

Pants: I’ve been wearing the Lancome tinted moisturizer for almost four years now. I love, love, love it. However, it’s no longer on the Lancome website, and I checked a Lancome counter recently and they only had ONE left in the back. You better believe I got that. This makes me really sad because this has been such a great product, and I don’t want to search for a new one. In fact, in the last week I’ve gotten two compliments from people asking if I was wearing foundation/what I was wearing because it looked like I had nothing on, but my skin looked good. LANCOME DON’T RUIN MY LIFE/CRUSH MY DREAMS!

Do you lovely readers have any tinted moisturizers you’d like to suggest we try?
