Give me all the makeup and brushes you have

1 Jul

Pants here again. In my last post I talked about what makeup I would buy if my cosmetics bag had been misplaced for a few days. Today, I’m going to talk about something even scarier – what if ALL my makeup was gone FOREVER (ever… ever… ever…)?

Let’s make this a little less upsetting – ONLY my makeup is gone. Everything else is fine. My cat scratched the crap out of the person who stole all my makeup, so they didn’t come back for anything else. And they bled all over their vehicle. And the scratches got infected. And they’ll probably lose at least one leg. And they have terrible acne that even my makeup couldn’t hide. HASHTAG KARMA.

After crying (and probably vomiting), I would have to decide what would really need to be replaced. Because let’s be honest, we might love all of our makeup, but we don’t necessarily use all of it. I’m a sucker for green/turquoise/teal eye shadows, but those aren’t something that I wear everyday.

So if all of my makeup went missing for good, here are the products I would absolutely have to repurchase:

Glimmer & Shimmer / Give me all the makeup and brushes you have

(Clockwise from left: Maybelline Dream Lumi Concealer, Tarte BB Tinted Treatment 12-hour Primer,
Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder)

Tarte BB Tinted Treatment 12-hour Primer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen (light) / $34 @ tartecosmetics.com
Years ago I used a tinted moisturizer and loved it. Then I tried 800 products, and each time I would love it for a month, then was over it.  I wanted glowy, natural looking skin, like I wasn’t wearing anything. I went to Sephora and tested all the tinted moisturizers and BB creams from my favorite brands. After talking to a sales girl, she suggested the one that was actually my top runner – the Tarte BB Tinted Treatment 12-hour Primer Broad Spectrum SPF Sunscreen. There’s a lot of words in there, and the two that threw me off were “primer” and “sunscreen.” I wasn’t sure it could be worn by itself, but the associate told me that it could and that she really loved it. It goes on smooth, and has a silky/silicone-like feeling of a primer, but it’s tinted and evens out my skintone. Plus, the sunscreen is great – I went to the West Side Wiener Dog Races last weekend and while my shoulders burned like nobody’s business, my face was fine.

Maybelline Dream Lumi concealer (Radient) / $6.44 @ target.com
Great for brightening under/around my eyes, and the price isn’t too shabby.

Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder (Translucent) / $3.97 @ walmart.com
I honestly can’t tell a difference between this and the MAC Mineral Skin Finish Natural that I’ve been using for the last two years. The packaging isn’t as nice, but who cares?

Glimmer & Shimmer / Give me all the makeup and brushes you have

N.Y.C. Smooth Skin Face Powder Sunny bronzer / $2.99 @ kmart.com
This has good color payoff, I don’t need to use much on my translucent skin AND it’s like $2-3 in most drug stores.

Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush (Tipsy) / $26 @ tartecosmetics.com
This is probably my favorite blush. It’s bright coral, which makes me happy. Sometimes I forget about it, but whenever I use it again I get mad at myself for not using it more.

Give me all the makeup and brushes you have

Elizabeth Arden Pure Finish Highlighter (Rose Illumination) / $34 @ elizabetharden.com
So glad that rose gold is finally popular again. When I was in 7th grade, it was big. My mom ordered me a rose gold chevron ring from QVC, and I still have it. For years I’ve been waiting for it to get popular again, so I’m pumped to be able to get so many things in this beautiful color. When I heard that Elizabeth Arden was coming out with the Rose Aurora collection, I had to refrain from buying all of it. I settled on the highlighter, and it is definitely my favorite. (My gloomy day pictures don’t do it justice, so visit Fleur De Force’s blog for a swatch.)

Glimmer & Shimmer / Give me all the makeup and brushes you have

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion (Original) / $12 @ urbandecay.com
I loved this product since I first tried it five years ago. My shadows don’t crease and they look vibrant and freshly applied all day. I would go for the travel tube because you don’t have to use much and it lasts forever.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Powder Duo (Medium Brown) / $23 @ anastasia.net
It may seem pricey, but the one I’m using now I’ve had for around two years, and it’s still going strong (that’s a new one in the photo that I STILL haven’t had to use yet). I like powder because it looks more natural and because you get so much more product than in a pencil.

Glimmer & Shimmer / Give me all the makeup and brushes you have

LORAC Mint Edition Palette  (Ulta version) / $36 @ ulta.com
This was a difficult decision. I have a lot of palettes and I like to switch between them every day. I decided to go with the LORAC Mint Edition because it’s what I’ve been using the most lately, and I think it has a good mixture of colors so that I can wear different looks. Plus, it’s limited edition and luckily still available. It has matte colors and really nice shimmery colors, too. BONUS – It comes with a coral lipgloss, gorgeous coral-peach blush AND a makeup bag.

Glimmer & Shimmer / Give me all the makeup and brushes you have

Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof eye liner (Lionfish) / $20 @ stilacosmetics.com
All-time favorite eyeliner. This bronzy color really makes blue eyes look more blue. It works with pretty much any shadow color. (Except oranges or corals – I feel they look a little too Halloweeny/fall-like for this time or year.)

Buxom Lash Mascara (Blackest Black) / $19 @ sephora.com
I haven’t bought mascara in months because I probably have eight years worth of free samples that I’ve been trying to go through. However, if they were all gone, this is the one I’d buy – lots of volume, doesn’t clump and no flaking.

TOTAL: $217.40

Okay, that’s nauseating. I actually feel physically ill thinking about having to replace all of those things at the same time.  So don’t steal my makeup, jerks.

According to my last post, it would have cost me $50.77 to replace all of my makeup using drugstore products that I like, leaving out tools or brushes, which I didn’t even get into here.

Whew! Do you know what you’d replace if you lost all of your makeup?

Poll Results – How many foundations do you use?

6 Feb

Well it’s looking like that most of you just have one foundation in your arsenal.  There is definitely nothing wrong with that. If you have one fabulous foundation that you love love love, then so be it!

Red:

Now that I’ve started thinking about it, I realized that I have several different foundations. I have my reasons though!

Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation ($42, Sephora.com) – Don’t let the price deter you. I’ve been able to purchase this foundation at a discounted price at All Cosmetics Wholesale. The reason why I have this foundation is because it has a stronger covering power than my others. I like it for special occasions and night outs when I know I’m going to need a little extra coverage and when I know I’ll be having my picture taken. I also like it because it doesn’t have SPF in it. Did you know that a foundation with SPF isn’t the best to wear for photographs? The zinc oxide is the culprit and can cause that paled out face look in photographs.

Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Makeup ($45, Nordstrom.com) – I recently started using this foundation. I have always been looking for that Holy Grail every day foundation and think I’ve finally found it. I need a few things from an every day foundation. I want it to make my skin look flawless, not dry me out, and somehow still look very natural. This does all of the above. It is so light, you really can’t even tell that you are wearing makeup. This foundation is water based and therefore is very hydrating. It also has SPF in it which is great to help protect my skin and keep it looking young. This one comes with a pretty hefty price tag as well, but I think it’s worth every penny. It will last for quite a while as a little goes a long way.

Stila Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15 ($16, Stilacosmetics.com) – I think this tinted moisturizer has been discontinued because it is on clearance and limited quantities are available. This is what I used everyday. I later switched and was only using it during the summer months. It does have shimmer to it and gives you a pretty healthy glow. It’s very light, but now as I have gotten a little bit older I think the coverage is too sheer for me. I definitely felt the need for something with a little more coverage.

MAC Select SPF Foundation ($27, maccosmetics.com) – Before I found the above mentioned Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua, I was using this as my every day foundation. I liked it for the most part. It had nice coverage. I did notice during the winter months that it dried my skin out a little bit on my cheeks and around my mouth. That’s why I was still looking for other foundations.

Pants:

I used to only have one foundation, and it was my beloved Lancome Aqua Fusion Teinte. But because it has been discontinued (sad face), I’ve been accumulating new foundations lately. I didn’t realize until I gathered them all up. I was also on the search for a full coverage foundation for special occasions. I’ll talk about the ones that I use.

Lancome Aqua Fusion Teinte ($38.50, lancome-usa.com) – Loved this so much. It was the first foundation product I used, and I never felt the need to try anything else for everyday use. I have combination skin, and my forehead can look oily, but somehow flakey at the same time. I never had that issue with this product. Plus, with the SPF, I never got sunburned, and my nose used to burn all the time. The coverage was light, and looked natural. It felt like I wasn’t wearing anything on my face. This is what I’m looking for.

tarte Amazonian Clay Full-Coverage Foundation SPF15 with brush! ($34.56, qvc.com) – Here’s the thing about this one – I really like it. I like it a lot. It has good coverage, and it doesn’t make me look oily or flakey. It lasts for hours… but I bought the wrong color. I thought since I was pale as a ghost, that I would be fair, but it turns out that I’m light. I think if I wear it and make sure to blend into my neck and put on some bronzer, it might be fine. However, I keep meaning to do this and let Red see it and give me her opinion. I don’t want to look crazy. I would have exchanged it, but with QVC you have to pay more for shipping, so I just kept it. The brush is AMAZING, and it costs $32 alone, so it was totally worth it.

Elizabeth Arden Intervene Makeup SPF 15 ($36, elizabetharden.com) – My mom and I both got color matched for Elizabeth Arden foundations when we were Christmas shopping. They gave us little samples of our colors to try out. I fell in love. This foundation is the perfect coverage, goes on smooth and keeps me looking matte. It also looks great all day, I don’t notice it breaking down or oxidizing. It doesn’t feel heavy at all. This will be my special occasion foundation.

Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Makeup ($45, Nordstrom.com) – Like Red, I also recently got this foundation. What I love is that it’s water-based, like the Lancome Tinted moisturizer. It’s a thin consistency, but gives nice coverage – my skin, but better. It’s light and leaves my skin feeling soft. I am experiencing some forehead flakes, but I’ve been trying new products lately that have broke me out as well, so I’m working on that. This will probably take Lancome’s place and become my everyday foundation product.

Best of 2011 – Face Products

4 Jan

We decided to pick out our favorite products we used in 2011. Instead of having one crazy long post with a ba-jillion items, we decided to cut it down by category so that we can maybe focus a little more on our super duper favies.

Keep in mind, these products weren’t necessarily released in 2011 – they were products we used in 2011 and we loved.

Today we’re going to talk about products we use on our face, including makeup, cleansers and moisturizers.

(Pants’ favorites. Keep reading to find out what they are!)

Makeup

Foundation

Tinted Moisturizer

Concealer

Powder (pressed or loose)

Highlighter (for cheeks)

Bronzer

Blush

  • Red – Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Tipsy – This is the perfect coral shade. It doesn’t have any shimmer in it and it gives your cheeks the most amazing punch of color.
  • PantsBenefit Sugarbomb – I love the natural color of this with the hint of shimmer. I find myself going back to this blush again and again, especially if I’m short on time because it’s like a blush and highlight in one step.

Skin Care

Face Wash

Makeup Remover

Moisturizer

Poll results – What products do you typically “hit pan” on?

4 Apr

Friday we asked what products you typically hit pan on – eyeshadow and blush tied for first place, followed by lipstick in second, with setting powder and mascara in third.

We just realized that we left out foundation… That probably would have been a popular one. Our bad, guys! Our freakin’ bad.

Here are the items we’ve hit pan on:

Pants

I have a few favorite eyeshadows that I usually go to on mornings when I’m running late/in a hurry/can’t think long enough to decide what colors to wear. The first one pictured is Sparkle by Elizabeth Arden, my favorite highlight! I used to wear it every day, but I’ve been switching things up lately. The next one in the photo is Lucky Penny by Clinique, which is described as a muted bronze with a hint of pink. It’s a great sparkly neutral. The last eyeshadow is Underground by Urban Decay, a super shimmery medium brown. One day I decided I wanted a sparkly brown and I found this, which was exactly what I was looking for.

I’m also on the last few drops of my Urban Decay Primer Potion in Sin. I love having a sparkly base. I don’t even have to use a highlight with this, but I typically do. It keeps my shadows from creasing and looking like they’ve just been applied all day.

Of course I’ve “hit pan” on my tinted moisturizer (Lancome Aqua Fusion Teinte), I don’t know how many tubes of it I’ve used. Loves it.

Red:

I have a few go to items that are my favorites. Pictured above is Lorac’s Perfectly Lit Oil-Free Luminizing Powder, something I use every day. It has a hint of shimmer to it which can help you achieve a pretty dewy effect.

The next pictured item is the Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Concealer.  This is the best concealer that I have EVER used.  I can hide any blemish, dark circles, redness, anything with this stuff.  I will be ordering another one very soon.

The last item pictured is MAC Eye Shadow in Honey Lust.  I absolutely love this shimmery coppery shadow. It is fabulous and is easily worn alone or paired with other shadows. No worries I already have a full size pan waiting on me.

The following are several items not shown that I’ve “hit pan” recently and  have already replaced them.

Nars Blush in Orgasm: This is the perfect shimmery peachy blush color. I wear it all of the time. I have lost track of what number I’m on.

NYX Round Case Lipstick in Ceto: I just replaced this on the recent makeup extravaganza trip to Pittsburgh. This lipstick is absolutely amazing. It’s a gorgeous frosty pink shade. You can layer so many different lipglosses over it for the most amazing looks.

Tell us what items you’ve “hit pan” on recently.

It’s in the bag

14 Sep

Both of us Glimmer & Shimmer ladies went on trips this weekend – Red on an exotic getaway to Washington, DC, and Pants to Pittsburgh for a business trip. Yeah, we’re pretty exciting.

Since we both just happened to have our makeup bags packed for trips, we’ve decided to share what’s in our bags.

Pants

I’m trying out a new makeup bag. This one came free with some set, just like my old one, but it’s got a lot more space. It’s not that I need more space to pack more, but it was hard to pack my Naked Palette in the old one with everything else.

When it comes to packing, less is more. Especially when I’m alone – I don’t want to carry any more than I have to. That’s why trial sized items are AMAZING! More space, less weight!

Here’s a list of the items in my bag:
