It’s not easy bein’ green

8 Mar

St. Patty’s day is coming up and we already have our green makeup picked out. We hope you do too. In case you don’t, here are our picks for some green fun.

Chanel Illusion D’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in #84 Epatant ($36, chanel.com)

Just in case bright shadows aren’t your thing, this is an amazing greenish taupe shade. You can sparkle and shimmer all day and/or night.

Urban Decay Glide on Eye Pencil in Graffiti ($19, sephora.com)

You can have some real fun with a bright green eye pencil. This particular one has great pigmentation.

Lancome Color Fever Gloss – Green Petal ($26, nordstrom.com)

This gloss may look scary, but it doesn’t look green on your lips. It just adds some pretty green glitter than you can wear alone or on top of another lip product.

Already have some green makeup, but don’t know how to wear it? No worries! Here are some tutorials:

A bright look: Sour Skittles by xsparkage

A standard look: Lucky Green by MakeupByTiffanyD

A smokey/glittery look:  Smokey Glittery Green Tutorial by AlbaMayo

A dramatic look: Anything Goes Liquid Liner by Lisa Eldridge

How much green do you plan on sporting for St. Patty’s Day?

Tried It Tuesday – Chanel Vitalumière Aqua

6 Mar

About a month ago, we took a trip up to Pittsburgh for a makeup adventure. We both ended up leaving with this Chanel foundation. Today, we’re going to tell you what we think about it.

Chanel Vitalumière Aqua ($45, macys.com)

Red – I had been on the look out for an extremely hydrating foundation. I have dry skin and my skin loves any extra moisture it can get. I started hearing lovely things about this foundation and immediately set out to buy it.

I have been wearing this every day since I bought it. I like to apply it with a beauty blender. I have been wearing a hydrating foundation primer with this as well. I LOVE this stuff. It goes on so smoothly and you can’t even tell that you are wearing anything. It blends into the skin flawlessly. I seriously think since wearing this my skin has looked the best it has looked in a really really long time. I haven’t had any problem with dry flakes or break outs. I think I have finally found my holy grail of foundation.

I give Chanel Vitalumière Aqua 5 out of 5 sparkles.

Pants – Red told me about this foundation and started sending me video reviews. Like I’ve said 800 times, I’m trying to find a replacement for my beloved discontinued Lancome Aqua Fusion Teinte. Since this foundation also has SPF 15 in it, and is water-based, I thought it might be the perfect replacement.

Well, I’ve been having skin issues. I have combination skin, but it’s always leaned more on the oily side in my T-zone. Well with this foundation, (and to be fair, every other foundation I’ve tried lately) I’ve been looking like a powdery/flakey mess. I’ve had some dry patches on my forehead and on my cheeks.

I stopped using a setting powder on top. I switched moisturizers. I’ve worn a primer. I’ve used a setting spray. I’ve exfoliated. Each of these things have helped slightly, but I still look a little flakey/powdery. I’ve been applying the foundation with a Beauty Blender, but I’m thinking about switching to a foundation brush tomorrow to see if that changes things.

I do like how this foundation looks on me, but the flakiness has got to stop. I’m hoping my skin stops being so weird in the next few weeks as it starts to warm up.

I give Chanel Vitalumière Aqua 4 out of 5 sparkles.

Tell us, have you tried out any new foundations recently?

February 2012 Favoritessss

1 Mar

With February out of the way, we’re one step closer to Spring, thank goodness! No mo’ snow! And hopefully no more dry skin!

Here are the products we just couldn’t put down in February:

Pants:

Urban Decay Naked2 ($50, urbandecay.com) – I know many people weren’t impressed with this palette, but I’ve been using it almost everyday. I think I’ve used it more than I ever used the original Naked. My favorite color combos are Bootycall on the brow bone, Tease in the crease, and either Suspect, Pistol or YDK on the lid. Busted is a great outer V color. If you don’t have the Naked2, this is just mumbo jumbo. Let’s just say, I’m really, really happy that I got this palette for Christmas.

Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-hour Blush in Tipsy ($24, tartecosmetics.com) – I think this may have been my favorite last month, too. I have loved coral and peach colors since I was little, and it makes me super happy to have some bright coral on my cheeks. This blush is matte, and I love to add a little bit of shimmer on my cheek bones.

Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstain in Cranberry Crush ($2.49, Amazon.com) – Of course this is discontinued, because I LOVE it. This is a bright cranberry red, which leans more on the red side than purple. It lasts a really long time (like I wake up the next morning and it’s still on), and looks good solo or with gloss on top. Sometimes I like to pair red, glittery glosses on top, but clear gloss looks great, as well. I could see it being a nice all-year-round red lip color. I may actually have to stock up on this.

Red:

Chanel Joues Contraste Blush in #55 In Love ($43, chanel.com) – I actually picked this blush up from All Cosmetics Wholesale for a little more affordable price. This is a blush that was recommended by Lauren Conrad and is why I now own it. It’s a coral-peach with golden shimmer. The shimmer is super light. It’s such a gorgeous color. I love the flush it gives my cheeks and I cannot put it down.

Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow/Liner in Birthday Suit ($19, benefit.com) – This is an amazing shimmery brushed chrome cream shadow. I absolutely love it. I’ve been pairing it with MAC’s Sable, a plum/brown shade, and love the combination.

Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter in Creme Brule ($7, target.com) – I have been going with a light nude lip  as of late. I love this light shimmery shade. It pairs well with almost any eye look.

Tell us, what have you been loving this month?

Tried It Tuesday – Chanel Illusion D’Ombre Long Wear Luminious Eyeshadow

28 Feb

This week’s Tried It Tuesday is brought to you by Red.

Chanel Illusion D’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in #84 Epatant ($36, chanel.com)

I have had my eyes on these luminous eyeshadows for quite a while. I liked all of the shades, but after seeing Rachel Bilson’s Shoemint ad here I was set on Epatant. It’s a lovely taupe shade with a hint of green to it. I happen to love how this looks on my hazel eyes.

This eyeshadow is described as a gel. I’m not sure if that is the right definition. I would call it almost a mousse. It is very light and spongy. This lightness makes it nice for using it as a nice wash. It is incredibly easy to intensify the shade as well. It blends so easily. I have been wearing this shadow almost daily. I love the luminous quality to this shadow. The price tag is a little steep for one eyeshadow, but you do get a lot of product and a little goes a long long way.

I give Chanel Illusion D’Ombre Long Wear Luminious Eyeshadow 4 out of 5 sparkles.

Poll Results – How many foundations do you use?

6 Feb

Well it’s looking like that most of you just have one foundation in your arsenal.  There is definitely nothing wrong with that. If you have one fabulous foundation that you love love love, then so be it!

Red:

Now that I’ve started thinking about it, I realized that I have several different foundations. I have my reasons though!

Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation ($42, Sephora.com) – Don’t let the price deter you. I’ve been able to purchase this foundation at a discounted price at All Cosmetics Wholesale. The reason why I have this foundation is because it has a stronger covering power than my others. I like it for special occasions and night outs when I know I’m going to need a little extra coverage and when I know I’ll be having my picture taken. I also like it because it doesn’t have SPF in it. Did you know that a foundation with SPF isn’t the best to wear for photographs? The zinc oxide is the culprit and can cause that paled out face look in photographs.

Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Makeup ($45, Nordstrom.com) – I recently started using this foundation. I have always been looking for that Holy Grail every day foundation and think I’ve finally found it. I need a few things from an every day foundation. I want it to make my skin look flawless, not dry me out, and somehow still look very natural. This does all of the above. It is so light, you really can’t even tell that you are wearing makeup. This foundation is water based and therefore is very hydrating. It also has SPF in it which is great to help protect my skin and keep it looking young. This one comes with a pretty hefty price tag as well, but I think it’s worth every penny. It will last for quite a while as a little goes a long way.

Stila Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15 ($16, Stilacosmetics.com) – I think this tinted moisturizer has been discontinued because it is on clearance and limited quantities are available. This is what I used everyday. I later switched and was only using it during the summer months. It does have shimmer to it and gives you a pretty healthy glow. It’s very light, but now as I have gotten a little bit older I think the coverage is too sheer for me. I definitely felt the need for something with a little more coverage.

MAC Select SPF Foundation ($27, maccosmetics.com) – Before I found the above mentioned Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua, I was using this as my every day foundation. I liked it for the most part. It had nice coverage. I did notice during the winter months that it dried my skin out a little bit on my cheeks and around my mouth. That’s why I was still looking for other foundations.

Pants:

I used to only have one foundation, and it was my beloved Lancome Aqua Fusion Teinte. But because it has been discontinued (sad face), I’ve been accumulating new foundations lately. I didn’t realize until I gathered them all up. I was also on the search for a full coverage foundation for special occasions. I’ll talk about the ones that I use.

Lancome Aqua Fusion Teinte ($38.50, lancome-usa.com) – Loved this so much. It was the first foundation product I used, and I never felt the need to try anything else for everyday use. I have combination skin, and my forehead can look oily, but somehow flakey at the same time. I never had that issue with this product. Plus, with the SPF, I never got sunburned, and my nose used to burn all the time. The coverage was light, and looked natural. It felt like I wasn’t wearing anything on my face. This is what I’m looking for.

tarte Amazonian Clay Full-Coverage Foundation SPF15 with brush! ($34.56, qvc.com) – Here’s the thing about this one – I really like it. I like it a lot. It has good coverage, and it doesn’t make me look oily or flakey. It lasts for hours… but I bought the wrong color. I thought since I was pale as a ghost, that I would be fair, but it turns out that I’m light. I think if I wear it and make sure to blend into my neck and put on some bronzer, it might be fine. However, I keep meaning to do this and let Red see it and give me her opinion. I don’t want to look crazy. I would have exchanged it, but with QVC you have to pay more for shipping, so I just kept it. The brush is AMAZING, and it costs $32 alone, so it was totally worth it.

Elizabeth Arden Intervene Makeup SPF 15 ($36, elizabetharden.com) – My mom and I both got color matched for Elizabeth Arden foundations when we were Christmas shopping. They gave us little samples of our colors to try out. I fell in love. This foundation is the perfect coverage, goes on smooth and keeps me looking matte. It also looks great all day, I don’t notice it breaking down or oxidizing. It doesn’t feel heavy at all. This will be my special occasion foundation.

Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Makeup ($45, Nordstrom.com) – Like Red, I also recently got this foundation. What I love is that it’s water-based, like the Lancome Tinted moisturizer. It’s a thin consistency, but gives nice coverage – my skin, but better. It’s light and leaves my skin feeling soft. I am experiencing some forehead flakes, but I’ve been trying new products lately that have broke me out as well, so I’m working on that. This will probably take Lancome’s place and become my everyday foundation product.

Tell us, what are your go to foundations?

Chanel, MAC and Sephora, oh my!

2 Feb

I think we’ve complained here several times about the lack of high-end makeup retailers in our town. The mall has Lancome, Clinique and Estee Lauder counters, and a new boutique in town has started carrying Stila and Butter London, but we are in dire need of a Sephora and/or Ulta. Oh, and we’ll take a Macy’s with a MAC and Chanel counter, too, while you’re at it.

So Pants has been wanting to go to Pittsburgh for a few weeks now to find a particular lip gloss and to get some tinted moisturizer samples. Red wanted to go to a Chanel counter and try out a couple of their foundations, so we planned a trip, and headed up to the Ross Park Mall yesterday evening.

We both had lists, but our first stop was Chanel in Macy’s.

Red has been watching many of Lisa Eldridge’s videos on YouTube lately. Some of Lisa’s favorite foundations are from Chanel, so Red has been wanting to check them out. During her research, she discovered that Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua is similar in texture to Pants’ beloved discontinued Lancome Aqua Fusion Teinte. So then Pants started watching video reviews too, and decided she wanted to look into it, as well.

We thought we were just going to figure out our colors and get samples. Nope. We both bought it, and we’re both the same shade, yay!

Since Pittsburgh and all of its makeup goodness is about an hour and a half away, we both prepared lists of everything we wanted to look for during our trip. We’ll share the rest of our goodies with you.

Pants

Our foundation color was out of stock, but you can see the super cute little sample on the bottom left corner there.

For Christmas 2010, I got a set of MAC lip glosses, and my favorite color from the set, Fab Fun, was limited edition. This crushed my soul, but by reading Temptalia, I found out there are a couple other similar shades: Morning Glory Lustreglass and Like Venus Dazzleglass. I wanted to compare them in person to decide which one I really wanted. It turned out Morning Glory won – it had smaller glitter, and looks slightly more pink on the lips. This was the main reason to go on the trip for me.

At the MAC counter, I also picked up a backup Eye Brows in Lingering. I tried out a Maybelline eyebrow pencil, but it’s only .001 oz. worth of product for $7, while MAC’s is $15 for .003 oz. MAC wins.

For Sephora, I had a long list of things I wanted to look at in person, but not necessarily buy. I guess I wanted to inspect them to decide if they needed to be added to my ever-growing wishlist. One of those things was Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm. Which as you can see, I ended up getting in Vanilla & Lavender. The smell reminds me slightly of Vicks VapoRub, but it’s not gross. So far, I really like it. But I did just get it last night.

I’ve also been eying the Urban Decay Super-Saturated High Gloss Lip Color in Apocalypse. I’ve been loving dark lip colors later, and had to have this. Today, I wore it like a stain (thanks for the tip, Lisa Eldridge!) by just patting the color on my lips with my finger. This one is going to be a favorite, I can tell.

I also ended up with the Harajuku Lovers “G” to Go. G is one of my top three favorite fragrances ever, so of course, it’s been discontinued. It’s so coconut-y and amazing. This was on clearance, so I couldn’t resist.

Red:

While at the MAC counter I picked up  a Cremesheen Lipstick in Fanfare. It is such an amazing shade of pink. I really wanted it after reading that it pairs perfectly with Boots No. 7 lip liner in 20 Nude. I also picked up another Eye Kohl pencil in Smolder. It’s my favorite and I was running low. Must. Not. Run. Out.

At Sephora I really wanted to check out the NARS blush in Luster. Lauren Conrad’s makeup artist, Amy Nadine, may have mentioned that this is a blush she uses often on Lauren and I may have immediately added it to my list. It’s funny because it’s one that I never would have checked out on my own. It didn’t look super exciting, but when I swatched it I was pleasantly surprised at how pretty it was. I bought it and wore it today. So far I love it.

I have been wanting a cream eye shadow. Lisa Eldridge has several videos using them, and they are just so quick and effortless. I opted for Benefit’s Creasless Cream Shadow/Liner in Birthday Suit. It’s a really pretty shimmery taupe brown. I wore it today and was very pleased with it thus far.

Keep your eyes peeled. We will definitely be featuring some of these products in our Tried it Tuesday feature once we have a chance to really try them out.

POLL – Would you spend $75 on one blush?

26 Aug

Yesterday Temptalia posted a review of this gorgeous product from Chanel – Ombres Tissees.

It says the product is for eyes and cheeks, but the colors make it seem more like a blush to us. While it looks sooooo pretty in the photo, we don’t think we could justify the $75 price tag. What about you guys?
