Give me all the makeup and brushes you have

1 Jul

Pants here again. In my last post I talked about what makeup I would buy if my cosmetics bag had been misplaced for a few days. Today, I’m going to talk about something even scarier – what if ALL my makeup was gone FOREVER (ever… ever… ever…)?

Let’s make this a little less upsetting – ONLY my makeup is gone. Everything else is fine. My cat scratched the crap out of the person who stole all my makeup, so they didn’t come back for anything else. And they bled all over their vehicle. And the scratches got infected. And they’ll probably lose at least one leg. And they have terrible acne that even my makeup couldn’t hide. HASHTAG KARMA.

After crying (and probably vomiting), I would have to decide what would really need to be replaced. Because let’s be honest, we might love all of our makeup, but we don’t necessarily use all of it. I’m a sucker for green/turquoise/teal eye shadows, but those aren’t something that I wear everyday.

So if all of my makeup went missing for good, here are the products I would absolutely have to repurchase:

Glimmer & Shimmer / Give me all the makeup and brushes you have

(Clockwise from left: Maybelline Dream Lumi Concealer, Tarte BB Tinted Treatment 12-hour Primer,
Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder)

Tarte BB Tinted Treatment 12-hour Primer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen (light) / $34 @
Years ago I used a tinted moisturizer and loved it. Then I tried 800 products, and each time I would love it for a month, then was over it.  I wanted glowy, natural looking skin, like I wasn’t wearing anything. I went to Sephora and tested all the tinted moisturizers and BB creams from my favorite brands. After talking to a sales girl, she suggested the one that was actually my top runner – the Tarte BB Tinted Treatment 12-hour Primer Broad Spectrum SPF Sunscreen. There’s a lot of words in there, and the two that threw me off were “primer” and “sunscreen.” I wasn’t sure it could be worn by itself, but the associate told me that it could and that she really loved it. It goes on smooth, and has a silky/silicone-like feeling of a primer, but it’s tinted and evens out my skintone. Plus, the sunscreen is great – I went to the West Side Wiener Dog Races last weekend and while my shoulders burned like nobody’s business, my face was fine.

Maybelline Dream Lumi concealer (Radient) / $6.44 @
Great for brightening under/around my eyes, and the price isn’t too shabby.

Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder (Translucent) / $3.97 @
I honestly can’t tell a difference between this and the MAC Mineral Skin Finish Natural that I’ve been using for the last two years. The packaging isn’t as nice, but who cares?

Glimmer & Shimmer / Give me all the makeup and brushes you have

N.Y.C. Smooth Skin Face Powder Sunny bronzer / $2.99 @
This has good color payoff, I don’t need to use much on my translucent skin AND it’s like $2-3 in most drug stores.

Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush (Tipsy) / $26 @
This is probably my favorite blush. It’s bright coral, which makes me happy. Sometimes I forget about it, but whenever I use it again I get mad at myself for not using it more.

Give me all the makeup and brushes you have

Elizabeth Arden Pure Finish Highlighter (Rose Illumination) / $34 @
So glad that rose gold is finally popular again. When I was in 7th grade, it was big. My mom ordered me a rose gold chevron ring from QVC, and I still have it. For years I’ve been waiting for it to get popular again, so I’m pumped to be able to get so many things in this beautiful color. When I heard that Elizabeth Arden was coming out with the Rose Aurora collection, I had to refrain from buying all of it. I settled on the highlighter, and it is definitely my favorite. (My gloomy day pictures don’t do it justice, so visit Fleur De Force’s blog for a swatch.)

Glimmer & Shimmer / Give me all the makeup and brushes you have

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion (Original) / $12 @
I loved this product since I first tried it five years ago. My shadows don’t crease and they look vibrant and freshly applied all day. I would go for the travel tube because you don’t have to use much and it lasts forever.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Powder Duo (Medium Brown) / $23 @
It may seem pricey, but the one I’m using now I’ve had for around two years, and it’s still going strong (that’s a new one in the photo that I STILL haven’t had to use yet). I like powder because it looks more natural and because you get so much more product than in a pencil.

Glimmer & Shimmer / Give me all the makeup and brushes you have

LORAC Mint Edition Palette  (Ulta version) / $36 @
This was a difficult decision. I have a lot of palettes and I like to switch between them every day. I decided to go with the LORAC Mint Edition because it’s what I’ve been using the most lately, and I think it has a good mixture of colors so that I can wear different looks. Plus, it’s limited edition and luckily still available. It has matte colors and really nice shimmery colors, too. BONUS – It comes with a coral lipgloss, gorgeous coral-peach blush AND a makeup bag.

Glimmer & Shimmer / Give me all the makeup and brushes you have

Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof eye liner (Lionfish) / $20 @
All-time favorite eyeliner. This bronzy color really makes blue eyes look more blue. It works with pretty much any shadow color. (Except oranges or corals – I feel they look a little too Halloweeny/fall-like for this time or year.)

Buxom Lash Mascara (Blackest Black) / $19 @
I haven’t bought mascara in months because I probably have eight years worth of free samples that I’ve been trying to go through. However, if they were all gone, this is the one I’d buy – lots of volume, doesn’t clump and no flaking.

TOTAL: $217.40

Okay, that’s nauseating. I actually feel physically ill thinking about having to replace all of those things at the same time.  So don’t steal my makeup, jerks.

According to my last post, it would have cost me $50.77 to replace all of my makeup using drugstore products that I like, leaving out tools or brushes, which I didn’t even get into here.

Whew! Do you know what you’d replace if you lost all of your makeup?

Reader question: What’s the best mascara you’ve ever used, and why?

15 Jun

This week on our Facebook page, our lovely reader Natalie asked us what’s the best mascara we’ve ever used, and why?

Mascara is a weird thing. Our favorites tend to shift all the time. One month we may love one kind, then we might try another and it’ll be our favorite for three months, then we’ll never use it again. Also, sometimes it’s possible to have more than one favorite at a time.

Here’s our thoughts on some mascaras!

I currently have about three favorite mascaras. I have a few others that I rank up there as  “old faithfuls” in case I end up one day hating my favorites. You know what I’m talking about.

1 – Tarina Tarantino Fleur de Lash ($19, Sephora or $29.96 for two at QVC) – This is the softest mascara I’ve ever used in my entire life. I first wanted to try this after seeing Tarina on QVC, and she talked about how soft it was and how you can layer it without clumping – totally true. If you are wearing this and touch your lashes, you wouldn’t think you have mascara on, but when you look you’ll see that your lashes are super long with lots of volume. I’ve never had any problems with this smudging either. Recently it was on sale for $10 each at Sephora, and you better believe I stocked up. I don’t like to buy high end mascaras because drug store brands typically work as well, but $10 was a bargain.

2 – Buxom Lash ($19, Sephora) – I’ve only had a sample size of this, and I LOVED how it made my lashes look. They were super duper thick and long. I never had any smudging or clumping issues. The one downside to it is the price – I don’t really want to pay $20 for a mascara that I’ll only use about three months. However, if I could get it cheaper or free, I’d stock up like I did with the Tarina Tarantino.

3 – L’Oreal Double Extend Eye Illuminator in Black Crystals (~$10 at Drugstores/Target/Walmart) You know I love me some sparkle. The mascara by itself in this product is kinda meh, but it’s great when paired when the sparkle end. It adds a lot of length to my lashes, with just a hint of sparkle. I can see where this could get clumpy, so I use the sparkles with a light hand. If you touch your eyes a lot, it’ll flake, but what mascara won’t? I didn’t have any issues with smudging.

  • Lacome Definicils (~$25) – Price is the downside, however I get a free sample when I buy my tinted moisturizer, so I’m stocked up.
  • Covergirl LashBlast Luxe Mascara in Black Emerald(~$6) – Used this for months. Love the big wand, love that it’s green and love that it has some shimmer. Stopped using it because I wanted to try a black mascara for a while, but I still heart it.
Thumbs down:
  • Benefit BADgal lash mascara ($19, – Got a mini version as a 100 point at Sephora. While it looked good when applied, by the end of the day it looked like I didn’t even put on mascara.
  • Smashbox Lash DNA ($19, – Maybe I got a dud, but it looked like I didn’t even apply any mascara when I used this. I immediately gave up and used another kind.
  • Laura Mercier Long Lash Mascara ($24, – I had high expectations for this because Laura Mercier’s products are supposed to be amazing. It was just kinda average. I would rather spend $6 on a drugstore mascara that works just as well.
  • Hard Candy Curl Up & Dye (~$4.60, Walmart) – This stuff is balls. It’s too wet so it clumps, it doesn’t curl and the colors aren’t bright enough. I tried it in Late Night (teal) and Venus (purple), and both were terrible with little color pay off.

I currently have two favorite mascaras. Many others have fallen into the mascara pit of despair.

1 – Maybelline Lash Stiletto Waterproof Ultimate Length Mascara – Very Black ($7, Target) – I was wanting to try a waterproof mascara for the summer and had heard good things about this one. It is amazing! I plan on getting the non-waterproof version very soon. It separates your lashes amazingly well. It also makes them look extremely long. It doesn’t get clumpy or gloppy on the wand or on the lashes. Removal is extremely easy and it doesn’t get black flakey stuff everywhere.

2 – L’Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes – Carbon Black ($9, Walgreens) – After buying my first tube of this mascara,  I decided I liked it but didn’t think it was an all time favorite. Now I’m on my fourth tube and can definitely say that this is a favorite. I love the wand and formula of this mascara. I love how my lashes look so incredibly long when I use this.

  • L’Oreal Double Extend Eye Illuminator in Black Crystals (~$10 at Drugstores/Target/Walmart) – Pants mentioned this mascara in her favorites. I do like this, but I tend to use it more on special occasions.
What are your favorite mascaras, and why?

December MVPs

4 Jan

It’s time for our MVPs again! Here are our most used beauty items for December.

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Zero: I’ve been looking for a good black eyeliner to use on my waterline – this pencil is perfect. It really glides on smoothly, stays on the waterline and looks great when I smudge it under my lashes. I can’t believe I’ve had this pencil for months and never tried it.

Benefit – Sugarbomb: I’ve been wearing this blush everyday. It’s the only matte blush that I have, and I love the natural look it gives me. Definitely great for an everyday look, and now I can’t wait to try Benefit’s new blush, Bella Bamba.

Benefit Erase Paste: I don’t typically get dark circles under my eyes, but my sleep schedule was a mess in December. Erase Paste really came in handy on those days to make me look more awake.

Hello Kitty for Sephora -Say Hello Palette in Super Fun: When I got an e-mail about a Hello Kitty line of makeup at Sephora, I possibly peed my pants a little. Makeup AND Hello Kitty? Hell to the yes. A private sale was held for Sephora Beauty Insiders a few weekends ago, and I ordered the brush set and this palette. I was a little worried about the quality of the makeup. Obviously, with the MAC Hello Kitty line, it was going to be the same quality as MAC makeup. But this eyeshadow is amazing. It’s highly pigmented and lasts all day. I’ve been blending the gray and using the black as a liner for a daily look, and adding more black and packing the gray on darker for an evening look. I can’t wait to try the other products from this line.

The middle layer has a light purple, medium purple, gray and a sparkly black. The bottom layer has three lip glosses that I haven’t really tried out yet – clear with glitter, red, hot pink and purple with glitter.

Too Faced Enchanted Glamourland: I got this as a Christmas gift from my husband and can’t. put. it. down. I use everything in this palette, the shadows, the blush, the bronzer and the lipgloss. I even traveled with it and I rarely take this large of a palette with me when I travel, but I couldn’t leave home without it. Sadly when I went to link to this palette, it doesn’t look like it’s available anymore.

Buxom Lashliner in Leatherette: I’ve been playing around with liquid liner look lately and have turned to this. It’s perfect for that liquid liner look without the extreme messiness of a liquid.

Tarte Natural Cheek Stain in Glam: For Christmas Pants gave me Sephora’s Glitz and Glam Shimmer and Shine Makeup Deluxe Sampler. One of the items in this sampler is this fabulous cheek stain. It’s a super pretty shimmery peachy color.  I like how glowy it makes my cheeks look.

November MVPs

30 Nov

Things have been a bit crazy in Glimmer & Shimmer land – the month of 1,000 birthday is about to come to and end, and we just got through Thanksgiving, and now it’s time to Christmas shop.

Sometimes when you’ve got a lot on your mind it’s easier to stick with your favorites because you know what your makeup is going to look like. Today we’ll focus on our MVPs for November.

Pants: Lately, I can’t get enough lip gloss. In fact, I have a little pencil pouch in my purse filled with probably eight different glosses at the moment. I like to have options, OK?

The first one on the left is Victoria’s Secret Beauty Rush lip gloss in Cupquake. I was trying to decide between this and another similar color when I read the name and decided I must own a gloss named Cupcuake. So far my mom has complimented me on it, but she’s really the only one I’ve worn it around yet. I just got this on Black Friday, but I’ve been putting it on nonstop, so I think it definitely counts as an MVP.

The next is Clinique Long Last Glosswear SPF 15 in Air Kiss. I think I’ve written about this before. It’s a nice pale glossy pink, and it’s not too sticky. Good as an everyday gloss.

The last gloss is Too Faced Glamour Gloss in Pillow Talk. It’s described as a mauve shimmer, and is very natural. Besides the great color, it also smells AMAZING! I’ve heard it described as mint chocolate chip – it’s definitely a minty smell, and it almost makes me want to taste the gloss. It also has a cooling feeling when you apply it. When I finish this mini version, I definitely will want the full size.

Here are swatches of the glosses:

Left to right: Victoria’s Secret Cupquake, Clinique Air Kiss, Too Faced Pillow Talk

Also making it to this month’s list is the Tarina Tarantino Sparklicity Palette (which I’ve talked about 500 times) and Buxom Lash mascara in Blackest Black. I got the mascara free with some gift and I love, love, love it. My lashes look as long as false lashes, and I think it thickens too. I don’t know if I’d be willing to pay $18 for it when I run out of this one though.

When I pulled my MVPs I realized that I have been sticking with palettes lately. I think that’s because things have been a little crazy and with palettes  not too much thought has to be put into my makeup. I can grab a palette and go. Also, I just noticed that everything I’ve been using recently is packaged in shimmery gold colors.

Too Faced Natural Eye Palette
– I have been using this palette a lot, particularly the brown color called espresso. The colors in this palette are super shimmery and I love having a little extra of that when the weather turns cold.

Pop Beauty Goddess Palette – Pants got this for me for my birthday and I cant quit using this. This palette is full of shimmery shadows as well as an equally shimmery blush and gloss.

L’Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes – I bought this mascara on a whim while perusing Target’s makeup aisle. Now that I have it, I can’t put it down. I love how this makes my lashes look.

Did you have any new MVPs in November?

Hot Mess!

2 Nov

Here’s another celebrity example of what NOT to do with your makeup. Taylor Momsen please step away from the eyeliner. Now we G&S girls love eyeliner, but we do not abuse it.

We recommend not using eyeliner to look like a racoon unless it’s for a halloween costume.  Moderation is key! Here are some of our favorite eyeliners to use.

Discountin’ and Exercisin’

26 Oct

This past weekend we Glimmer Shimmer girls got to attend a fantabulous Halloween Party. We of course had a blast! We wanted to share our costumes and makeup with you.

I went as a super rad extreme 80’s exerciser, or better yet jazzerciser! I don’t know what my bangs are doing in that picture and I apologize for their misbehavin’. I actually had a lot of fun with this costume. I found my shorts at Target on clearance for $2. My shirt was from Goodwill for $1. I took some scissors to it for major 80’s action. I think my socks were actually soccer socks, but they were an obnoxiously loud purple and I couldn’t pass them up.

For my makeup, I chose very bubble gummy and intense colors. I went straight to my Urban Decay Book of Shadows Volume III for some intense purple action.  I used a mix of Bordello, Rockstar, and Last Call on my eyes.  I loved how purpley and awesome they looked. I used Dolly Mix by MAC on the apples of my cheeks for a very pink flush.  I went super frosty and glossy on the lips. I chose Too Faced Lip Bronzer in Pink Leopard. It smells sweet and very cake like by the way, which I think is so 80’s.

Discount! That’s right, over a month ago I decided I wanted to go as Flo, the Progressive Insurance girl. I like to start planning early so that if I have to order pieces I can or so that I have time to look around for cheap items because in some cases they won’t be worn after Halloween.

For my clothes I wore a light gray pair of pants that I got at the Gap years ago because I didn’t want to buy white pants since I would never, ever, ever, ever wear them again. I also already owned the watch, navy blue Chucks and Bump It. The white polo I got on clearance at Old Navy for like $8, and the headband came in a pack of three at Walmart for a couple dollars. The apron was about $6 at Michaels, which is also where I bought the blank button for under $2. Progessive actually has a page where you can print off the logos in case you want to be Flo for Halloween. Luckily, I already owned iron on printer paper for the apron.

As for my makeup, I didn’t wear Flo’s official Lady Bug by Mac. I wore Kat Von D Painted Love Lipstick in Adora on my lips, which is kind of a metallic, bright red. It stayed on most of the night, but I think maybe I should have worn some liner under it. For eyes, I wanted to stay true to Flo and do black liner on the top lids only, and wing it out a little. For some reason, I have a really hard time winging out eyeliner, but I actually did a decent job and I think I may have learned the secret! I used Buxom Lashliner in Leatherette, and applied it with an angled brush. I couldn’t really tell if Flo has any other eye makeup on, so I also used Buxom Stay-There Eye Shadow in Mutt to give a little bit of sparkle. This is probably the look that I’ll keep for the party I’m going to this weekend.

October MVPs

21 Oct

So while some of us may have enough eyeshadows to wear a different color every day for a month, it seems there’s there’s a few shadows we keep going back to… Of course, the same goes with blush, lip gloss and so on.

Depending upon what month it is, the products we use change.  Here are some of our October MVPs (most valuable products).

Back Row from left to right: MAC Shadow – Bronze, MAC Shadow – Go, MAC Pigment – Copper Sparkle, MAC Pigment – Jardin Aires, MAC Blush – Dolly Mix.

I didn’t really realize until I set these eye colors side by side that they remind me of the colors of the changing leaves. My subconscious had the perfect idea for fall! I never wore all of these eye colors all together, but in various different combinations. The blush I wore every day. It is definitely one of my new favs!

Buxom Stay-There Eyeshadow in Mutt – I bought this a couple months ago and was originally kind of disappointed that it wasn’t darker brown, but lately I’ve wanted a natural sparkly look to wear with a dark purple, burgundy or navy liner. I’ve actually gotten quite a few compliments on my eyes and just my overall sparkly-ness since busting out this shadow. I wasn’t able to get a picture of it in good lighting, so check out the pictures from The Non-Blonde.

Victoria’s Secret Beauty Rush Lip Gloss in Slice of Heaven – Just a light pinky sheer gloss with lots of sparkle. While it is a little sticky and my hair does get in it if it’s windy, it moisturizes and is long-wearing.

What are your MVPs? Share them with us in the comment section!
