Poll Results – Do you usually do your own nails?

6 Jun

This time for our poll, we asked if you usually do your own nails.  We are so happy that you DO do your own nails.  It’s a nice occasional treat to have them done, but it can get pricey when you need them done all of the time. Plus, when doing them yourself you can really play around and experiment with fun looks.

Here are some of our tips to make your at home mani/pedis last as long as possible:

1) Wash your hands and then wipe your nails with a cotton pad soaked with nail polish remover. This will help remove any oils and grime that could potentially interfere with the polish adhering to the nail properly.

2) Always always ALWAYS use a top coat and a base coat.  This helps the polish adhere to the nail and it gives a gorgeous shiny finish.

3) Apply two thin coats of polish instead of one thick coat. This gives you nice coverage with the polish. It also prevents any bubbling and premature peeling.

4) If you’re anything like us, then you aren’t not patient enough to sit around waiting for your nails to dry. Get a fast-drying nail spray.  This is a must. (We like Orly Spritz Dry and Beauty Secrets Fast Finish 60-Second Polish Dryer/Top Coat, both available at Sally Beauty Supply.)

5) If your hands are shaky, or you tend to immediately smear your polish, take extra precaution. Try watching a 30 minute TV show on DVD so that you won’t want to flip during commercials. Use a clipboard as your table. After you polish your nails, keep your hands palm down on the clipboard while you watch your show. It may sound crazy, but it works! You’re definitely more careful!

Here are some fun colors that we are loving at the moment.

Essie’s Tart Deco ($8 Target) – This is a gorgeous orange color. It dries brighter and orangier than it looks from the bottle. I’ve been loving this color. It such a nice punch of color. Orange happens to be one of my favorite summertime colors.

Essie’s Lilacism ($8 Target) – This is such an amazing purple shade. I think it is such a lovely change from the darker purples that I usually wear.  It’s looks light in the bottle, but it does dry a little darker than that.  I cannot get enough of this color.

Essie’s Limo Scene  ($8, Target) – I wanted a sheer pinky color that looked natural, and not bubblegum pink. I applied one thin coat of this to get the results I wanted. It’s definitely a more “nude” pink than a cotton candy pink.

Essie Absolutely Shore, ($8, Target) – This is described as a soft sea foam green, and if you know me, you know I love me some green. I had eyed this color several times, but wasn’t sure if I would wear it because pastel nail polishes tend to make me think of “Clueless.” But I love, love, love it. It’s definitely a color for the spring or summer.

Obviously we’ve been a little biased today with Essie, but we’ve just kind of recently discovered the brand and how great the polishes are. We’ve been going four to five days with no chips, and that’s quite a feat! The great things about these polishes too is that you can find them at Target, Walmart, Kmart, Rite Aid, CVS and Walgreens. Rite Aid even had a buy one, get one 50% off sale recently.

What are your favorite Essie colors?
