The NYX Has Hit the Fan

17 May

OK, so yesterday we felt a little differently about the whole NYX 12th Anniversary Sale debacle than we feel today.

If you’re out of the loop, here’s what happened – NYX sent out an email and announced on its Facebook that the company was having a 12th anniversary sale on Sunday from noon to midnight, PST. All makeup items were priced at $1.20 each during that 12 hours. The website went down the night before to “get the site ready.” OK, fine. Well, then the site wasn’t working when the sale started, 3 p.m., our time. It finally was “up and running” by 8 p.m. Pages were slow to load, and if you got items in your cart, it was impossible to get to your cart. If you got to your cart, it was impossible to check out. We had issues where we’d get to check out and there was no place to enter our credit card number.

Following the incident, NYX promised to give everyone a coupon code for 50% and free shipping IF they emailed them for the code. They said they wanted to give out individual codes – fine, that makes sense. If there are individual codes, people can’t give out the code all at once and slow the system down again.

Well, customers were promised to have the codes in their email this morning. It’s past 10 p.m., and  only Red has gotten a code.

Pants’ original order was about $20 – several jumbo eye pencils, glitter eye liners, a few jumbo lip pencils and a handful of lip glosses. At full price, this would cost more than $90. At 50% off, the total was about $45… double the “anniversary sale” price.

Many are calling this a “bait and switch,” saying the company did this on purpose – promised a sale price that only a few people got and then gave out a 50% off code so they would make more money.

We don’t know what happened. We don’t agree with people posting mean and hateful things on the company’s Facebook page. But we do think that the $1.20 price should be honored – either NYX could do the sale over now that they know how much traffic to expect OR give out a new coupon code.

Are we going to boycott NYX? No, we still like their products. Are we going to use the 50% off coupon code? We don’t know.

Tell us, would you use the coupon code?

I gave up after several attempts at the original sale. Yes, $1.20 is a great price. But, had I not known about the sale, I would have gladly paid full price for the products. NYX is a reasonably priced brand–it’s not worth my time & effort to fret about the website issues. I’m even considering ordering through Ulta in order to avoid any future headaches.

After this whole ordeal I doubt that I’ll ever purchase from their website again. I’ll stick with Ulta.
