Our Makeup Story

18 Nov

There has been something floating around YouTube recently that we thought would be a lot of fun to do.  It’s all about your makeup story.  So here’s ours!

Pants’ travel makeup bag

1. How old were you when you started wearing makeup?

Red : I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup until I was 16 and in high school, womp womp. I also happen to look so young so the lack of makeup didn’t help my case. Needless to say the no makeup rule really ruined. my. life.

Pants: I remember wearing CoverGirl pressed powder in middle school, maybe 7th or 8th grade. And in 8th grade I definitely rocked glitter gel on my eyes everyday. My mom actually encouraged/begged me to wear mascara all the time because she was jealous of my lashes, but I didn’t start wearing mascara until college. I would wear makeup when I went out with friends, but didn’t start wearing it every day until I was in graduate school, so around 23.

2. How did you get into makeup?

Red : I started dancing when I was three years old.  I performed in several recitals and as a dancer we had to wear a little bit of stage makeup. Typically it was some blush and lipstick. I absolutely LOVED getting to wear makeup. I was allowed to have some “play” makeup when I dressed up. It was a lot of lipstick, bright eye shadows and blushes.  I played with my makeup all the time. I was always counting down to the time I could actually wear it every day.

Pants: I probably got into makeup in middle school when I started reading Teen, YM and Seventeen. I loved seeing the Hard Candy nail polishes with the matching rings, and all the glitter makeup. I would buy it a lot, but not really wear it.

3. What are some of your favorite brands?

Red: I could probably name 500 brands and tell you that they are all my favorite, so I’ll try to narrow it down for you. I definitely love love LOVE Urban Decay, Mac, and Too Faced. I think it’s safe to say that those are some of my top brands.

Pants: Like Red, I LOVE Urban Decay, and I also really like Tarina Tarantino and Lancome. For some reason, I feel like Lancome is considered an “old lady” brand, but I love their tinted moisturizer, makeup remover and have some really great eyeshadow quads. For drugstore brands, Covergirl is my favorite – love their bright eyeshadows and mascara.

4. What does makeup mean to you?

Red: To me it means beauty. I use it as a tool to help me feel good about myself. When I have my makeup on, even if I’m wearing sweats, it just makes me feel good.

Pants: Makeup means creativity to me. I don’t get to be crafty everyday, but I can be creative when I do my makeup and try to decide what colors to use. Makeup is an art form, it’s amazing what you can do with it.

5. If you could only wear 4 products on your face what would they be?

Red: I would have to pick Stila Illuminated Tinted Moisturizer, Stila Eye Shadow Pan in Kitten, L’Oreal Double Extend Mascara in Blackest Black, and Smashbox Lip Gloss in Pout.

Pants: I would wear my Lancome tinted moisturizer (Aqua Fusion Teinte), Urban Decay Deluxe Eyeshadow in Underground, Tarina Tarantino Fleur De Lash mascara and NARS blush in Angelika.

6. What is your favorite thing about makeup?

Red: I think my favorite things are the variety and options. There are so many colors and textures! The looks you can create are limitless.

Pants: Probably the bright colors – I love colorful things. Also the sparkles. Sparkles make me happy.

7. What do you think about drugstore makeup vs high end makeup?

Red: I don’t have any problem with drugstore makeup, but certain items I prefer the high end versions. Mascaras and the occasional lipstick I will get from the drugstore. Eye shadows I absolutely have to get high end because something in some of the drugstore brands break my eyes out.

Pants: I like them both. Drugstore was all I bought until Red told me about  Sephora a few years ago. I buy mostly eyeshadows, so if I see a color or palette I like, it doesn’t matter if it’s Avon, Urban Decay or Covergirl… I’ll get it if I feel I need it.

8. What is one tip of advice you can give to a beginner?

Red: I would say start simple.Maybe some mascara, blush and lipgloss. When you are feeling comfortable with that then start to add some razzle dazzle with eye shadows.

Pants: Play around! I hesitated about wearing makeup for so long because I thought I looked like a clown with it on. So I started playing around when I would go see bands play by wearing bright eyeshadows and mascaras, then I tried more natural looks with brown shadows. Eventually I got comfortable wearing it and with my application.

9. What is one makeup trend you never understood?

Red: All of that blue eye shadow way back in the day. It was so….BLUE. People would pair it with red lipstick too. That is one trend I definitely never understood.

Pants: Boys wearing nail polish. This was big during the 90s, and I hated it. When boys wear nail polish or have long nails, it creeps me out. I’m looking at you, Carson Daly.

10. What do you think about the beauty community on YouTube?

Red: I think it is fabulous! Where else can you go and find so many tutorials and reviews…besides here at Glimmer and Shimmer of course!

Pants: I was very excited when I stumbled upon the YouTube beauty community. I joke that watching makeup organization videos is like porn to me. Everyone seems super friendly and it’s really helpful with learning tips and what products are worth looking into.
