November MVPs

30 Nov

Things have been a bit crazy in Glimmer & Shimmer land – the month of 1,000 birthday is about to come to and end, and we just got through Thanksgiving, and now it’s time to Christmas shop.

Sometimes when you’ve got a lot on your mind it’s easier to stick with your favorites because you know what your makeup is going to look like. Today we’ll focus on our MVPs for November.

Pants: Lately, I can’t get enough lip gloss. In fact, I have a little pencil pouch in my purse filled with probably eight different glosses at the moment. I like to have options, OK?

The first one on the left is Victoria’s Secret Beauty Rush lip gloss in Cupquake. I was trying to decide between this and another similar color when I read the name and decided I must own a gloss named Cupcuake. So far my mom has complimented me on it, but she’s really the only one I’ve worn it around yet. I just got this on Black Friday, but I’ve been putting it on nonstop, so I think it definitely counts as an MVP.

The next is Clinique Long Last Glosswear SPF 15 in Air Kiss. I think I’ve written about this before. It’s a nice pale glossy pink, and it’s not too sticky. Good as an everyday gloss.

The last gloss is Too Faced Glamour Gloss in Pillow Talk. It’s described as a mauve shimmer, and is very natural. Besides the great color, it also smells AMAZING! I’ve heard it described as mint chocolate chip – it’s definitely a minty smell, and it almost makes me want to taste the gloss. It also has a cooling feeling when you apply it. When I finish this mini version, I definitely will want the full size.

Here are swatches of the glosses:

Left to right: Victoria’s Secret Cupquake, Clinique Air Kiss, Too Faced Pillow Talk

Also making it to this month’s list is the Tarina Tarantino Sparklicity Palette (which I’ve talked about 500 times) and Buxom Lash mascara in Blackest Black. I got the mascara free with some gift and I love, love, love it. My lashes look as long as false lashes, and I think it thickens too. I don’t know if I’d be willing to pay $18 for it when I run out of this one though.

Red:

When I pulled my MVPs I realized that I have been sticking with palettes lately. I think that’s because things have been a little crazy and with palettes  not too much thought has to be put into my makeup. I can grab a palette and go. Also, I just noticed that everything I’ve been using recently is packaged in shimmery gold colors.

Too Faced Natural Eye Palette
– I have been using this palette a lot, particularly the brown color called espresso. The colors in this palette are super shimmery and I love having a little extra of that when the weather turns cold.

Pop Beauty Goddess Palette – Pants got this for me for my birthday and I cant quit using this. This palette is full of shimmery shadows as well as an equally shimmery blush and gloss.

L’Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes – I bought this mascara on a whim while perusing Target’s makeup aisle. Now that I have it, I can’t put it down. I love how this makes my lashes look.

Poll Results – What makeup are you thankful for?

29 Nov

Eyeshadow and eyeliner won last week’s poll for the makeup most people are thankful for. Tied for second place was foundation, mascara and blush.

We hope that everyone had a great holiday and got a good start to their Christmas shopping (Pants definitely did!).

We know it’s a little late, but since it’s Cyber Monday, here are some makeup deals we found:

  • Stila, up to 80% off
  • Smashbox friends & family sale  – 20% off with code: FFSB20
  • EvePearl, up to 55% off with code: BPCM2010
  • e.l.f. – 55% off
  • Coastal Scents – 33% off entire store
  • MAC – free overnight shipping with code: MACDAY
  • Tarte – 30% off everyday items, 15% off limited edition holiday items
  • Urban Decay – $6 eyeshadows and $12 sets in the clearance section

We’re considering breaking up with Urban Decay because we both waited up late Thursday to find out what its Black Friday sale was going to be, and it ended up being the $6 eyeshadows and $12 palettes that had been up since Wednesday! Lame. And their 15-anniversary eyeliner set is $92. And it was only on sale for like four hours. Come on, UD! We can’t buy ourselves something like that less than a month before Christmas, and our loved ones didn’t know about the sale. At least it will be released again in January, and maybe we can expect it as a Valentine’s Day present.

Did you guys find any good Cyber Monday sales? Share them with us!

POLL – What makeup are you thankful for?

26 Nov

We told you earlier this week what makeup we’re thankful for, so now we want to know what our readers are thankful for! Feel free to vote for as many as you like, because we know it’s hard to choose just one. Also, if you’d like to be more specific, please  comment and let us know!

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! Remember, calories don’t count on Thanksgiving, but they do the day after so shopping is a great way to burn calories!

Black Friday Makeup Deals… sorta

24 Nov

So we had planned to do a round-up of Black Friday makeup deals… Except we couldn’t really find any. There are rumors that Ulta and Sephora are doing something special, but this is the most we could find from today’s Sephora newsletter.

Please remember to check our Twitter and Facebook pages over the next few days for updates on good deals that we find! We won’t be posting here on Thursday, but check back here on Friday for our weekly poll.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Let’s Give Thanks

23 Nov

It’s that time of year where we take a moment to pause and reflect on and think about everything we are thankful for. We Glimmer & Shimmer girls would like to take the time to do the same… about makeup of course!

Red: The things in my makeup bag that I’m most thankful for are things that I cannot stop using at this point in time. I have been using these items EVERY day.

Pop Beauty Goddess Palette: Pants got me this little palette of amazingness for my birthday. I have not been able to go a day since receiving it without using something from it. The eye shadows are so pretty and are so easy to use together or alone. It doesn’t hurt that they are so sparkly and pretty either.  The lip gloss is a perfect peachy nude shade. You can easily wear it over another lip gloss or lipstick or by itself is fine too.  I love the blush and highlighter in the palette too. I think the color is so flattering and pretty.   Needless to say, I love love LOVE this palette.

Urban Decay’s Naked Palette: I would be crazy if I wasn’t thankful for this palette. It’s another perfect palette. It makes packing for travel so easy. The combination of neutral matte and shimmery shades are perfect. It also is lovely that it comes with two liners. The amount of gorgeous looks you can create with this palette are endless.  If you don’t have this palette yet, it would be a good one to ask Santa to bring you.

MAC Painter Pot in Painterly: I never used a primer until fairly recently. This little primer totally changed my life. It really helps your eye makeup stay put all day long. I also think it helps a little with fall out. Now I can’t not use it. I must prime my eyes before applying any eye makeup.

Pants: Like Red, I’m going to try to stick to things I’ve been using every day or use most often. Obviously the Naked Palette is on my list as well, but I’ll skip it since she’s already covered it.

Tarina Tarantino Sparklicity Palette: I’ve been wearing this for a natural eye look almost every weekday. It gives a natural look, with just a hint of color and a little glitter. I love to wear the gold glitter (located on the top) over the browns in the middle and left side. The pink glitter is good for highlighting and I use the dark brown as a highlighter. Also, the case is super cute, and it’ll make packing to go to my parents’ house this week a lot easier – I’ve got an entire eye look in one palette.

MAC Eye Brows in Lingering: On “What Not to Wear,” Carmindy always talks about the importance of eyebrows and how they’re the gateway to the eye or something equally as cheesy. A nice eyebrow really does make a difference. I don’t want to pluck mine because I’m terrified of over plucking, so using this eyebrow pencil to fill mine in to give them a more defined shape has definitely helped. I’ve used this every day since I bought it in September. The girl working at the MAC counter helped me pick my color, and I’m really happy with it.

Urban Decay Primer Potion: Over a year ago I received a sample of Urban Decay’s Primer Potion in Sin and fell in love. It was sparkly and it helped my eyeshadow stay on all day without creasing. Since then, I’ve tried the original color (invisible) and Eden (matte nude) and I love them all. It’s something that you think won’t make a difference and is just being sold to suckers that believe anything, but it really works. I just wish they would sell Greed (gold) separately because I would love to try it.

Poll Results-When Did You Start Wearing Makeup?

22 Nov

The poll results are in and it was a mixed bag. On Friday we asked when you were allowed to start wearing makeup. There were a couple of votes for “whenever I wanted’….LUCKY!  There were also a few votes for 12, 13, and 15.

Red: I mentioned before that I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup up until way late in the game by and that it ruined. My. Life. I think, especially in the teenage years, that feeling good about your outer appearance is of extreme importance. It helps with self esteem and confidence, which I had little to none of either largely because of the way I felt about my appearance.

I now have a daughter and it is something that I have already thought about. I want my daughter to be confident and feel good about herself.  When she asks to wear makeup we will take baby steps. I’d like her to start with one or two items and then gradually add things as she gets older. I want her to look her age and not older.  Of course I’m excited to share all my tips and tricks when she gets old enough to wear makeup. Please do not get me wrong, I’m not rushing my daughter to grow up in any way. I’m enjoying every day of her baby goodness right now.

Pants: I don’t know if my mom really had a certain age in mind that she would allow me to start wearing makeup. I just kind of start playing around with it in middle school, and she let me get what I wanted. Maybe because she always wanted me to stop trying to big like me big brothers and be girlier. I was never a tomboy, but I didn’t wear dresses or skirts unless it was required.

I think I stayed away from makeup because I was lazy and wanted to sleep in as long as I could, plus the fact that I thought I looked like a clown with it on. I started wearing it everyday after I started getting a lot of compliments when I wore it. So, yeah, maybe that was a superficial reason, but I’ve really gotten into it and have a lot of fun with it. I’ve always loved all the different colors you can choose from and how you can play around with them.

When I grow up (because I don’t like to admit I’m an adult) and get married and have a million babies, if some of those are girls, I think I’ll take the same approach as Steph or my mom. Let her play around, try to help her pick out the right colors, but start slowly. If she wants my help, I’m there, but if not I’m not going to force it. I think the worst thing you can do is tell a kid that they can’t do something until they’re a certain age – you need to base stuff like that on the individual child.

If you have a sassy little girl in your life, there are some fun makeup options for her too! Why not look into some felt or crocheted makeup sets on Etsy? We fund this super cute pattern from GulfCoastCottagePDF (love the cupcake bag!), but there are also some premade ones available from other sellers.

Or why not get your little lady her own vanity? We know several sassy little girls who could use one of these.

When do you think is the right time to let girls start wearing makeup? Would you do things differntly from your parents?
