If you’re sick of Halloween posts, you’re in luck – this is the last one!
Some of you may still not have a Halloween costume picked out. If that’s the case then tsk tsk tsk! But don’t worry, we have some last minute ideas that may be of some use to you.
Various Celebrity – Pick someone who has hair similar to yours, then put on large sunglasses, baggy shirt, sweatpants and a pair of Ugg boots. Makeup can be minimal or heavy, depending on who you are. A Starbucks cup is a good prop. If your sweatpants say “Juicy” or “Pink” on the butt, then you should go as a “Sorority Girl.” Lots of bronzer is a must for that look.
She’s just bein’ Miley.
Recently on Glimmer and Shimmer’s Facebook page a reader asked how to determine what skin tone you have. It seems like a daunting task, but it’s easier than you think.
Skin tones are usually divided into warm, cool, and neutral. If you have warm skin tones , then you tend to look best in earthy colors, think oranges, bronzes, golds, peaches, browns, and ivory. Yellow based colors usually look best on these individuals. Cool warm tones tend to look best in jewel tones, silvers, plums, and white. Blue based colors usually look best on cool toned individuals. We love to hate and hate to love neutral toned people. Why? Because they look good in anything.
There are a few simple tests that you can do to see what skin tone you have. First is the Vein Test. Sounds gross, we know, but it’s not as gross as you think. During the day in natural light, make a fist and examine your inner wrist. If your veins are mainly blue in color that is a sign of cool tones. If they are green then that’s a hint that you are warm toned. If your veins are a mix of green and blue then that most likely means you are neutral toned.
Second, is the silver/gold test. In natural light hold gold jewelry and silver jewelry up to you and see which looks best. If silver looks best then you are probably cool toned. If gold is the ticket then you are most likely warm toned.
More of a visual person? Here’s a video from Pursebuzz that shows how to determine skin tone.

This past weekend we Glimmer Shimmer girls got to attend a fantabulous Halloween Party. We of course had a blast! We wanted to share our costumes and makeup with you.
I went as a super rad extreme 80’s exerciser, or better yet jazzerciser! I don’t know what my bangs are doing in that picture and I apologize for their misbehavin’. I actually had a lot of fun with this costume. I found my shorts at Target on clearance for $2. My shirt was from Goodwill for $1. I took some scissors to it for major 80’s action. I think my socks were actually soccer socks, but they were an obnoxiously loud purple and I couldn’t pass them up.
For my makeup, I chose very bubble gummy and intense colors. I went straight to my Urban Decay Book of Shadows Volume III for some intense purple action. I used a mix of Bordello, Rockstar, and Last Call on my eyes. I loved how purpley and awesome they looked. I used Dolly Mix by MAC on the apples of my cheeks for a very pink flush. I went super frosty and glossy on the lips. I chose Too Faced Lip Bronzer in Pink Leopard. It smells sweet and very cake like by the way, which I think is so 80’s.
Discount! That’s right, over a month ago I decided I wanted to go as Flo, the Progressive Insurance girl. I like to start planning early so that if I have to order pieces I can or so that I have time to look around for cheap items because in some cases they won’t be worn after Halloween.
For my clothes I wore a light gray pair of pants that I got at the Gap years ago because I didn’t want to buy white pants since I would never, ever, ever, ever wear them again. I also already owned the watch, navy blue Chucks and Bump It. The white polo I got on clearance at Old Navy for like $8, and the headband came in a pack of three at Walmart for a couple dollars. The apron was about $6 at Michaels, which is also where I bought the blank button for under $2. Progessive actually has a page where you can print off the logos in case you want to be Flo for Halloween. Luckily, I already owned iron on printer paper for the apron.
As for my makeup, I didn’t wear Flo’s official Lady Bug by Mac. I wore Kat Von D Painted Love Lipstick in Adora on my lips, which is kind of a metallic, bright red. It stayed on most of the night, but I think maybe I should have worn some liner under it. For eyes, I wanted to stay true to Flo and do black liner on the top lids only, and wing it out a little. For some reason, I have a really hard time winging out eyeliner, but I actually did a decent job and I think I may have learned the secret! I used Buxom Lashliner in Leatherette, and applied it with an angled brush. I couldn’t really tell if Flo has any other eye makeup on, so I also used Buxom Stay-There Eye Shadow in Mutt to give a little bit of sparkle. This is probably the look that I’ll keep for the party I’m going to this weekend.

In our latest poll we asked our readers to tell us their favorite brand of eyeshadow. We ended up with a four-way tie between Mark by Avon, Too Faced, Urban Decay and Bare Escentuals.
Today we’re going to feature our favorite colors from those brands, and if we’ve never tried them, we’ll pick out something we’d like to try.
Pants – I have not tried any of the BE products. I did order one of their products Sunday that I’m really excited about and I have used other mineral eyeshadows, but not this brand. Here is one BE set that I’ve got my eye on that I would definitely like to try/own/hug – the bareMinerals Women of BE 20-piece eye color collection. I’m sorry, did you say 20 shadows? Umm, yes please!
Red– I have only tried the Bare Escentuals Bare Minerals Foiled Eye Tutorial. It comes with a super double ended brush, and two sparkly colors (Disco and Night Owl). You can wear these colors dry or foiled. The foil application makes the colors look very metallic. You apply it by adding a little bit of water to the shadow. I used to wear these a lot when I went out on the town. I still go back to them occasionally. I like these shadows and wouldn’t mind trying another shade or fifty by Bare Escentuals.
There may be multiple brands of makeup in our train cases and vanities, but many of us tend to gravitate toward a certain brand, whether it be because of the colors or the consistency of the product.
We at G&S definitely have our favorites, but we want to know what our readers like. So please take a minute to vote in today’s poll and let us know what brand you’re loyal to. If your favorite brand isn’t listed, please fill in the other option.

So while some of us may have enough eyeshadows to wear a different color every day for a month, it seems there’s there’s a few shadows we keep going back to… Of course, the same goes with blush, lip gloss and so on.
Depending upon what month it is, the products we use change. Here are some of our October MVPs (most valuable products).
Back Row from left to right: MAC Shadow – Bronze, MAC Shadow – Go, MAC Pigment – Copper Sparkle, MAC Pigment – Jardin Aires, MAC Blush – Dolly Mix.
I didn’t really realize until I set these eye colors side by side that they remind me of the colors of the changing leaves. My subconscious had the perfect idea for fall! I never wore all of these eye colors all together, but in various different combinations. The blush I wore every day. It is definitely one of my new favs!
Buxom Stay-There Eyeshadow in Mutt – I bought this a couple months ago and was originally kind of disappointed that it wasn’t darker brown, but lately I’ve wanted a natural sparkly look to wear with a dark purple, burgundy or navy liner. I’ve actually gotten quite a few compliments on my eyes and just my overall sparkly-ness since busting out this shadow. I wasn’t able to get a picture of it in good lighting, so check out the pictures from The Non-Blonde.
Victoria’s Secret Beauty Rush Lip Gloss in Slice of Heaven – Just a light pinky sheer gloss with lots of sparkle. While it is a little sticky and my hair does get in it if it’s windy, it moisturizes and is long-wearing.
