Talking Shop

Not having a Sephora, MAC, Ulta or Macy’s in our town is a travesty. We repeat, a TRAVESTY. We hope, pine and dream that something will come here, but right now we have zip, zilch, nada. You get the idea.

So where do we get all of our makeup awesomeness? Let’s just say we thank sweet baby Jesus everyday for the internets. UPS and Fed-Ex love us because we sure do keep them in business.

Sephora: Red discovered this makeup mecca shortly after moving to the northern Virginia area. The availability of so many different brands and products makes this one fabulous place to shop.  You can have so much fun perusing all of the aisles.  After moving away from the northern Virginia area, Red started ordering her makeup from Sephora’s website. Whenever you receive your order it’s like Christmas in a box! Upon meeting Pants, Red introduced her to all things Sephora.

All Cosmetics Wholesale: This website is actually becoming Suite 7 Beauty very soon. Red stumbled upon this site when searching for makeup deals.  After watching several Youtube reviews about this site, Red felt it was safe to place an order. They have a variety of different brands and products, all at a discounted price. Some items may be unboxed, but the description of the item will always tell you.  Red is able to get her tinted moisturizer here at half off. Just this week, Pants got an empty Stila 4-pan palette for $8.49  (regularly $16) and an eyeshadow pan for $5.99 (regularly $18).

Ulta: This website is very similar to Sephora. They carry some similar and different brands. Pants discovered Ulta while visiting family in Wilmington, North Carolina a few years ago. It’s like Sephora, but carries drug store brands as well as department store brands. It also carries a few brands that Sephora doesn’t (such as Pop Beauty, Elizabeth Arden, Estee Lauder).

Members-Only Communities: Several members only website send out daily deals that include makeup a lot of the time. Ideeli, Haute Look and Gilt Groupe all have various makeup brands (as well as clothing, home items and pretty much everything else) that go on sale time to time for really good prices.

However, Pants did purchase an eyebrow kits from one of these places, and it looked like it had been opened, possibly dropped or even used. Despite the item being “not returnable,” after sending an e-mail, the company provided a packing slip and refunded all of her money. Pants has bought other items from these places (coasters, earrings) and they’ve arrived in perfect condition.

Any makeup brand website: A lot of companies will offer free shipping or sample deals if you sign up for newsletters. Clinique and Lancome have a lot of deals where if you spend a certain amount, you can get a free makeup bag filled with some freebies. You can also find these offers at department stores that have makeup counters.

For example, Lancome has a special right now with Elder Beerman – when you spend at least $32.50, you receive:

  • Rénergie Lift Volumetry Volumetric Lifting and Reshaping Cream
  • Rénergie Eye Anti-wrinkle and Firming Eye Cream
  • Color Design Sensational Effects Lipcolor in Trendy Mauve
  • Color design Sensational Effects Eyeshadow Quad in Madame Muse, Kitten Heel, Margarita Affair and Night Sky
  • Bi-Facil Double-Action Eye Makeup Remover
  • Hypnôse Drama Instant Full Body Volume Mascara in Black
  • Lancôme Signature Cosmetics Bag in Cranberry

Target: Target carries a lot of different brands of makeup, including some exclusives, such as Sonia Kashuk, NP Set, JK Jemma Kidd and Pixi. It’s also a great source for cute cosmetic bags, storage and Soft Lips products. Here’s a great palette available in stores – the Pixi Lumi Lux Eye Palette. You get 20 colors for $30.

Be Careful: eBay has A LOT of items from the Hello Kitty for Mac line. Well, a lot of those aren’t real. If you don’t care whether or not it’s real, just remember you don’t know where they’re coming from, who made them or what’s in them. For example, Mac only made two Hello Kitty quad eyeshadow palettes – no other eyeshadows were made. There are tons of individual shadows and palettes that may look real, but are fake. One 120 shadow Hello Kitty palette has 20 bids and is currently at $90 – and it’s a total fake. The photo doesn’t even show a close-up of the palette and none of the photos even have Hello Kitty on it.

The packaging on this product may make it look real, but it’s a fake.

Here are the real ones from Pants’ collection (please ignore the cat hair in the background and the terrible lighting).

Here is a great eBay guide to explain how to spot MAC fakes – MAC COSMETICS – How to Spot Fakes From An Experienced Seller.

This is why you should do your research before buying online. Check seller reviews and makeup blogs to see who to trust.

Where do you buy your makeup from?
