Ruby red lips

24 Aug

Friday’s poll ended with a tie between red lipstick and bronzer. Yesterday we featured a post on how to do bronzer, and today we’ll help out with how to do red lips without looking like you’re a member of a high school show choir or flag corps.

We have a few red lipstick heros who rock the look not only on special occasions, but everyday with t-shirts and jeans.

Liz Lee, star of MTV’s show “My Life As Liz”

Liz is queen of the nerd herd. The “popular” girls on her school picked on her. But those bleach blondes have nothing on this fiery redhead. Liz proves you can wear a Star Wars t-shirt and still wear red lipstick.

Gwen Stefani of No Doubt/ solo artist/fashion designer extraordinaire

When we think of red lipstick, we automatically think of Gwen Stefani. Whether she’s rocking with the boys or glamming it up solo, Gwen’s makeup is always flawless, and she can pull off red lipstick like a 1920s movie star. Fingers crosses that she’ll expand her perfume line into a makeup line!

Christina Hendricks of Mad Men

OK, we may be slightly biased toward redheads. But they look great in all shades of red lipstick.

Kat Von D, tattoo artist with her own Sephora makeup line

Kat proves that red lipstick looks great with black, brown, blonde and red hair. Also notice her tattoo on her belly says “Hollywood” written with a tube of red lipstick. Her makeup line features several great reds, such as the Adora Painted Love Lipstick:

She also has a blood red shade called Hellbent and a bright crimson, called Underage Red.

The hardest part of doing a red lip is finding the red that is right for you, as well as getting used to seeing it on yourself. It’s a bold color, and it can be a shock if you usually don’t wear any color on your lips.

An easy way to start out may to try out a red gloss, such as Victoria’s Secret Beauty Rush lip gloss in Cherry Bomb (a personal favorite of Pants). It gives a hint of red, but it’s not as bold and shocking.

If you are going to go for the bold red lip, there are a few key steps in achieving this look.  Make sure your lips are soft and conditioned. You can use a lip balm or you could try Too Faced Borderline Lip Liner or MAC Prep and Prime Lip. Next you will want to line your lips with a lip liner in a similar shade of red as your lipstick.  Now, using a lip pencil fill in the lines with the lip color.  Finally, clean up any mistakes with some foundation using a foundation brush. If you want a little shine add a clear gloss to your red lips.  Some reds we like:

Laura Mercier Lipstick in Mistress

NARS Lipstick in Jungle Red

MAC Lipstick in Russian Red

When doing a red lip you will want to keep your other features very subtle.  The ladies on Mad Men pair their red lips with with a light colored dual eye shadow called Madrague by NARS, back eye liner, and lots of mascara. It makes for a very classy look.

If you’re still not sure what red will look right on you, and you don’t want to spend a lot of money trying out different shades, head to a local makeup counter and ask for some help. Elder Beerman in Morgantown has consultants at their makeup counters who should be able to try colors on you, and if you’re feeling saucy, head up to Pittsburgh and visit one of the Sephoras and ask for help. The beauty experts there know their stuff.
